How do I increase towing performance?

The size of the refrigerator matters… along with the size of the shower.

We bought our TT Nov ‘21 intending to travel for 3 months, we ended up in that thing for a year and a half! They get small real quick. Currently in AZ and We still don’t know wtf we’re doing and will likely be back on the road soon… fun times.

Nice setup. Aluminum and composite construction.. this is an important factor that's getting lost in this thread due to shitter size and WDH squabbles.

How's the No-Bo (No boundaries) compare with your setup?

 

35 gallon black tank too. When at a rv site with full hookups you need to fill the blank tank, then empty, you can’t leave the valve open as you’ll end up with a tp blockage. Having to empty once a week is totally livable. Any longer stuff starts to smell.

 

7.6’ wide, double axle and only weighs 5klb loaded with everything. Pulls like a dream and is fully contained… propane, water and solar. Enough clearance to get to some cool places too.

 

That looks pretty cool. I'm guessing it wouldn't be ideal for me to get something similar with all the towing I'll be doing for work huh. I mean I can live with a small fridge if it's just me but a separate shower even if it's small would be a lot better than a wet bath. Also only having to dump the black water once a week would be ideal.

If I remember rightly the similar sized nobo gvwr was over the tacos 6,400lb and the bed wasn’t a walk around bed which was a must for us.

 

I towed it 8k miles.

Your problem is payload weight. Those bumpers aren’t good for towing

You said you'd be moving sites every 10 days or so and going 500 or so miles.. that's not a lot of towing.

If you bought the lightest Apex and practically emptied it before trailering around the flat lands while being extremely patient with your speed then it'd probably be fine on your truck and much more comfortable living. You haven't mentioned tools and equipment.. if you have to carry around several hundred pounds of gear for work you're probably SOL (and if you had to tow this big girl up the rockies your truck is going to be screaming bloody murder at 39 mph.)

Take a look at No-Bo trailers as well.

 

Sounds like me going up the last 1/4 mile of Wolf creek pass, 2nd gear @ 40mph, which was actually the speed limit. Not bad considering 30% less power at 10k ft elevation!

 

I only carry basic hand tools and tow straps in the truck. My toolbox weighs maybe 15lbs? Any other tools i haul would be left at the job site before i go anywhere with the trailer. But that was my plan, just empty it out before i move and drive around 55-60mph. A

 

ok so I just looked at my door jam and it says my payload capacity is 1200lbs stock. So without any of the weight savings from mods, I'd lose about 250lbs with the bumpers and winch, let's round up and say an extra 50lbs for bigger tires, 200lbs for me, and I'm looking at about 700lbs left for the tongue weight and everything else.

 

That's pretty solid. Keep in mind there isn't a single tongue weight you will see advertised or on the trailer sticker that isn't overly optimistic. On trailers the weight and tongue weight are always the bare minimum dry weights and don't include optional addons or the essentials like batteries and propane. So if the trailer says it has a 350 pound tongue weight, I'd add at least 100 lbs to all my figuring.

 

yeah Ideally I'd like to I'd like to get something around 400-450lbs of tongue weight at the most in case I start traveling with someone.

 

So I'm going to look at a couple more trailers tomorrow morning and will definitely ask about the NOBO. The dealer also sent me a link to an Grand Design Imagine 16ML with a pretty good price. It looks a lot more spacious and weighs ~3750lbs unloaded. Do you think that could be a good option or is there something I'm missing.

 

I mean I'd add the hundred pounds as the best case. Once you start packing stuff in it, it goes up. Batteries and propane are right on the tongue and not light. I'd shoot for one advertised as close to 300 lbs tongue weight as I could. I also have less payload than you, though.


If you'll have hookups wherever you go you can haul it with empty water tanks for a better time as well.

 

Remember, the salesmen wants to sell you what is best for him, not what is best for you.

If you're shooting for 4k loaded, which would be recommending if your not putting your truck back to stock config, then that trailer is going to be 4k before you add anything to it. I have only towed my utility trailer with a SxS or my motorcycle on it, and hills and headwinds make even 60-65 MPH miserable, and it's not because of weight. It's because of the ramp at the back of the trailer acting like an airbrake. You're going to have that issue no matter what, so if you can lessen the strain by going lighter I highly recommend it.

 

I only plan on towing with empty tanks, do you think I could get away with 4.5k loaded? It's a really nice and comfortable trailer but if not I'll look for something smaller.
