Yeah I had read in the article I pulled that photo from, it was taken while they were using one of the J58s to burn off excess JP7 fuel that the SR71 required after it was officially retired '99, when NASA was done using it. Kind of sad. I would do terrible things to get a chance to ride backseat in one of those.

 

Oooooo that makes alot of sense! You're not near any railroad tracks are you? We had an issue at my old machine shop with vibration traveling through the ground from the trains for a machine they set up. Only way they could fix it was build a footing for the machine that was about 12ft, solid concrete lol

But it was a big machine

First time I saw one was at an air show at March AFB. I was like Grandpa look at that plane! He said "that's not a plane it's a cannon with wings!"

 

that big ass gatling gun actually slows it down when it's firing, pretty neat

 

No shit; I've flown in and out of March AFB but didn't realize they flew out of there for entertainment reasons.

I saw them at 29 Palms during our live fire exercises doing ToT call for fire drills.

 

I think it was mid to late 80s I was just a kid. Never saw live fire.
I grew up about 15 minutes from March. My parents still live in the same house. I seen sr71s and Air Force 1 take off from there.

My grandfather "snuck" me on to Whiteman's AFB in Missouri when I was 8 or 9, he did deliveries to the base from his furniture/carpet company in Warrensburg. I was a plane nut as a kid and wanted to fly jets so he put me in his delivery truck and drove right in, telling them he was making a delivery.

Sounds crazy now but this was pre-9/11, I'm sure if we'd tried that today we'd probably both end up on a domestic terrorist watch list lol

the B-2 flies out of Whiteman AFB in Warrensburg and got to see it fly pretty low and loud when visiting their house a few times.

It was pretty awesome! My grandfather was a colonel so we always got some vip treatment.

Sneaking on to a base sounds like a fun way of going to prison.
