Not bashing- but NONE of your suggestions would apply to a 1st gen truck (you gotta be kidding me with a throttle body spacer). So yeah "most".

I actually advocated for throttle body spacing earlier in this thread. A TBS doesn't make a massive difference in performance; however, in my case, anecdotally, it did make for better throttle response on the low end. Superficially, I enjoy the whistling sound, too.

Getting back on topic here for a second...

    Cheap placebo:
    - Deck plate mod (likely a placebo, but there's forum posts with Dyno results out there, so who knows)

    Moderately Priced Placebo:
    - Throttle body spacer (already been talked about by others here)

    Expensive placebo:
    - K&N intake (similar to deck plate mod, but more legal)

    Expensive but actually does something:
    - Performance headers
    - Exhaust upgrade.

Now let's talk about the intake mods for a second. People here talk about them being pointless unless you have forced induction and exhaust upgrades since the engine won't actually be able to use the increased flow if it has no way to both suck in and push out higher volumes of air, but there's another theory as to why you might want to upgrade your intake without the other mods as well.

A cold air intake, in theory, will suck in cold air (duh, right?). The theory goes that regardless of whether or not you actually get larger volumes of air into your engine, you can still get performance benefits from the air simply being cooler which will translate to your engine running more efficiently. Now, is this actually true? That's... Debatable. No matter if you go deck plate or k&n, the filter is still located squarely in the engine bay which WILL get hot. Sure, the k&n filter has a heat shield, but it's not perfect and there will be some transfer. This topic has been debated to death on all the Toyota forums, and most people tend to agree that both mods are just loud toys rather than anything substantial. As I mentioned above, there are posts out there where people actually dyno'd their trucks with both mods, and surprisingly, the deck plate mod may have been the more likely to actually do anything. Still, the performance gains were only 4-5hp tops, but that's honestly not bad for $15 and 2 minutes with a dremel.

Anecdotally, I did the deck plate mod on my '97 5 lug, and I did feel a boost in power, but that's just as likely to be from me having a heavier foot to see whether or not it actually worked. Now I drive a '99 with a K&N filter, but that's because it already had one installed when I bought it. It's also supercharged with an axle dump, so no way to actually compare the two.

Both mods do sound really cool though.

Mods that actually give you your lost power back: regear to 4.88 or 5.29

The SCII has an intake air temp read out- basically it's always the outside ambient air temp when moving. No matter if stock through the elbow, or from the engine bay via deckplate or CIA. It spikes up when stopped regardless.

I'd like to see actual logs of each intake mod with MAF g/s and IAT readings to put that debate to an end.

Ha! Even if someone did a comprehensive test and tested out all this, there would still be someone who swears their K&N CIA and Borla Exhuast is adding 60 Butt-Dyno HP.

This will give you 100 more hp than the 3RZ, only weighs 30lbs more, and weighs a lot less than the 3.4 V6, its a lot more work than a super charger, but the price point is close, about the same cost. This swap will make your lifted oversized tire 1st gen feel somewhat nimble and fun to drive, gas milage will be about the same, i just drove from Tampa to West Palm Beach (227 miles) average 75mph air blowing cold got 19mpg with cruise on, it takes alot of control to keep your foot out of it, you can pass other cars at will any time. IMO best power option to replace the 4 cyl.

Ugh... I just got rid of my SC. Don't do this to me.

You forgot smoother than silk. You won't even know the motor's running when sitting at a stop light.

The only way to go faster is power to weight ratio. you either need more power ( supercharger, turbo, nitro, motor swap ) or you need to get lighter. Preferable both is ideal.
Since truck has a frame you could theoretically replace all the metal body and bed panels with carbon fiber. :)

Most non boosted cars from the factory don't leave cheap low hanging fruit that's smog legal horse power on the table.
It's nice that we have a smog legal super charger option.

There's always aero for speeds above 70+ mph. I think you would have to fab it yourself I don't think I have seen any aero for tacoma trucks.

Yeah i really should put something in the build thread, its been done (road worthy) for almost a year now, didnt want to do the actual day to day build post......what if it didn’t work? thought i would put some miles and time on it before posting a build. Here is some info, the 1uzfe is an aluminum v8 developed by Toyota in the late 80s for their Lexus line of sedans (LS400)&(SC400) to compete with BMW and Mercedes, they spent millions in developing it. HP is around 260, with lots of room to grow, it has steel forged crank, H-Beam style rods, hyperutectic pistons and is an FAA approved power plant. There is a lot of information for swaping this engine on utube, Lextreme, Cartunes and Northwest Toys in Oregon, its a fairly common swap, and knowing what i know now, not that difficult.
    More later
