Been hauling canoes and kayaks on various roof racks for 30+ years. Everywhere from highway to off-road. Always used two NRS straps around the hull. Not once have I used a bow or stern strap. Never had one come loose, shift or fly off. Just my experience.

Big fan of front and rear straps. The back in case anyone is wondering is 1.5" abs. The vertical pipes are unglued for ease of storage and the raised horizontal is reinforced with 1.5" aluminum flat stock for rigidity.

Two boat came completely off the person’s roof rack, and I was the truck right behind them- no clue how they were “tied down”

I use 2 NRS cam straps on the rack and then accessory cord for the bow and stern lines.

The problem with bow and stern straps on a pickup is that they will normally both be angled backwards so they don't offer any resistance to the canoe sliding forward in a panic stop. I've always put a strap from a thwart on the canoe to a crossbar on the rack to prevent this.

I have the exact setup you have…truck is even the same color. Racks work great with my kayaks. Longest one is 12. However, I just bought a 14.5 Saranac just like the one in mountainmike’s post…haven’t loaded it yet. I’m a little concerned about how far it will be unsupported over the cab. I’ve never used a bow line on the kayaks but feel like I need to use one with the canoe. I see your racks have tie down cleats. Mine does not but I feel safer attaching to the bed tie downs anyway.
I really like MM’s setup. May consider getting the roof rack and going in that direction.

@manderle Those straps look pretty beefy. Nice to have good straps.

Looks like some here are using just the roof rack and that seems to make a big difference on needing the end straps. Makes sense.

With the bed support some are using, your getting much more support across the whole canoe. MountainMike that ABS support is pretty dang stout. Pretty handy.

    I used these,

Amazon.com: MAXXHAUL 50241 Adjustable Steel Pick Up Truck Ladder Utility Racks-Pair, Black : Automotive

They are quite strong. I cut it down and rewelded it to be same height as my roof rack. Also I made 3d printed supports to put on my roof rack that craddles the gunwales and doesnt let it slide forward. My roof rack is about 21 inches off the bed rails. I think the stock height of these racks are at 26 or something like that.

The racks come with some funky hooks that are made to grab the bed rail. Instead of using those I welded a unistrut washer (1/4" thick) to a bolt head and then mount it to the tacoma bed tracks for easier relocating and removing. Works good for lumber and other junk too.

I just started using nicer straps in the last few years. I got embarrassed every time I heard, "Why are you using $6 straps to hold a $10k bike down". Old habits are hard to break especially when they seem to work just fine.

I'd highly recommend putting a couple small sections of clear PPF or vinyl on those edges just to protect the paint. Otherwise, great job! Some may see it as overkill, but a little extra insurance never hurts.

I just picked up my first Taco and trying to decide on how to carry an 18’ canoe. I have a set of naked roof Thule racks that I could use on the cabin. I was thinking of adding one ladder type rack at the rear of the bed.
