This may seem like a strange question but I acquired my 2000 SR5 Taco from a friend who said the ignition got stuck in on position and then he removed the ignition cylinder and ignition switch.

My idea was to add a push button start, remote start, keyless entry and everything fired up right away but I got a crank but no start.

It seems as thought the fuel pump is not firing so I was wondering if the ignition being stuck in run before the ignition was removed could have any effect on this.

    Welcome to the Forum!

Was the ignition circuit energized till the battery went completely dead? In theory no damage should have happened but one never knows .

Some place you missed something . Poor connection or you bypassed some circuit with your wiring

Draw up how you wired things I venture we can figure things out.

Just how did you wire the ignition circuit? AM2 is what energizes the coils ?

The fuel pump circuit is only energized when cranking and the engine is running .

How bad was the ignition cylinder housing damaged when the lock cylinder pin was drilled out.

I hope you have the schematics for your year truck.

good Luck! @Dm93 might be of some help as well.

IMG_1264.jpg IMG_1263.jpg First of all thank you for the welcome and the response.

I did change the battery at the beginning just to avoid that concern. The first pic is the install instructions for the system and I followed the toyota hookup at the bottom. The second pic is the wire layout I followed for my truck.

My truck does have two constant 12v wires so i spliced them together.

Is there any reason ign1 should be connected to one of the 12v constants???

One is white the other is white with a stripe.

On most cars there is a anti-theft chip inside the lock cylinder that lines up with a magnetic pickup sensor in the housing. Without the lock cylinder installed it can't see the chip so it won't let the vehicle start. For all it knows you removed the lock cylinder are trying to start the car with a screwdriver

You need a new lock cylinder and key, and whatever kind of reprogramming is required to get the car to recognize the new cylinder

This is my experience with most passenger cars. A 2000 Toyota might be different but I doubt it

I appreciate the response and I did wonder about the anti-theft issue but would that be the case on a vehicle that doesn’t have chip keys?

The chip is in the cylinder not the key. When you turn the cylinder it swings around and lines up with the sensor in the housing

Lots of 90s Japanese cars had this type of system

Could this be bypassed somehow if I dont’t have/want the keyed ignition? Or can I have the cylinder in place and turned to on position and still use the new system to start it?

Not sure, I've always replaced the key and cylinder. They're not expensive.

No chipped key in the 2000.

That only started a few years ago.

I bet you had something wired wrong most likely AM2 was missing something.

No chipped key on your truck.

My gut tells me that you friend misdiagnosed the problem from the beginning. If your truck has an automatic trans… Tacomas have an issue where the auto trans shifter bushings wear and when you push the gearshift lever to “P” the the key safety relay switch is not depressed… it sits under the PRNDL cover. If this switch is not depressed and the key solenoid is not triggered, you cant get the key out unless you disconnect the battery.

My guess is the tumblers /pins wore out.....
at that point the key wont switch off allowing you to pull it out..

And then to add insult to injury......if you cant get the key to turn to run position and out of accessory...
you cant get the key switch to separate from the ignition switch......

then your screwed.....you have to drill it out to get those apart......there's videos and stories on this....

That's most likely whats happened here....

the key switch should be replaced every 150K or repined and re-springed at a locksmith...
before it seizes..........plus a new cut off the master key you put away when you bought the truck....

A new ignition cylinder should cost around $75......
that ignition switch was $89 online line last time I check...
    or $20 for generic ' Ignition Switch-Starter Switch Beck/Arnley 201-1792
