    Best advice on making a clock when you have not before or a cabinet (with its complex joinery) ...

    Common pine examples first.

    2x4s stacked for the clock, which can be cut into simple shape (octagon, for example). Probably can re-use the clock-kit too.

    1/2 in panels for the cabinet because losing $60-$100 for a couple of "project pine" panels instead of real hardwood is easier. My first attempt at the nightstand mechanics (too complex for this post) was done in pine panels and poplar 2x2s. Fit is not ideal, though it is stiil strong enough. I did learn from those errors for the complex joints (slots, rabbets, etc) and from design errors.

    Just ny $0.02.
