Because it wouldn't make sense to mount them under the truck.

Plano? Is that the same company that makes those cheap divider plastic boxes I buy at Walmart to keep my flies in?

I have one of those boxes in my bed. They are made by pelican under another name just for military use. I got it for $15 at good will, aside from all the rifles I keep in it unlocked, it's just a sand bag to weigh it down and a bunch of 5" round sack attached dildos rubbed down in wheel bearing grease to make some thief's night fun.

I thought for sure I would have to ratchet it down or do something else, sandbag was just in my garage. I've had it in for a few years, and have really cranked it around, somehow it doesn't move. I think sitting on the factory rubber bed liner mat is helping a lot though.

They're very very similar 3rd gen has a reengineered rear bulkhead, the different roof line and rear light as well as revised rear pressure equalizing vents they also have a different floor pan if the different shaped edges to the floor mats are any witness.

Even still a *LOT* of parts are cross compatible between 3rds and 2nds but obviously not everything.

OP, are you asking why have them at all or why have them up there all the time? I can see how useful they would be on the trail or on a work truck. Not so much in the city every day.

I just got a 12-volt 5-ton electric jack and 12-volt impact wrench kit on a Prime Day deal. It was like $40 off. Comes in a hard case with metal clasps. Already used it and it works great. I plan to keep it secured in the bed of the truck as it's much easier than the stock jack.

Looking to put two plano cases on a roof rack
    traction boards in the center

    Why do people get black?
Black is hotter in the sun

    vs commonly available tan

I do see used legit Pelican cases for good prices but unfortunately they're black...
HFT has the tan ones, but they're not on sale right now
so they'd cost more than used Pelican and whatnot

I wonder if it's a negligible difference of temp like maybe 10deg and dependent on what gear you store, if it can handle it
tan would cool cool, but black wouldn't look horrible either, and be cheaper...

Exactly, the people who DD their rig around the city with RTT and hi lift jack, shovels and kitchen sink hanging on their car are just being dorks.

    No kidding

I even forgot I owned one for a minute

Would have to drive to my storage just to yank it out; we only used it for camping as it helped with room when we brought our chubby boy on 4 legs with us

    lol

well if you’re curious what brought about the enlightenment

I had to live in my truck for a short period of time
Thankful to those who helped provide info on how to do it

realized I should’ve asked my coworker more questions on how he set up his built Land Rover with all the overland shit.
Dude had everything to be self sustaining and used it for camping. ARB fridge, solar, second battery, controller, etc

    the bed was comfortable

but guess what. I realized quickly what this truck is at the end of the day: small, with limited storage room
    Clothes in drawers underneath
Recovery gear in back seat cubbies
My bare feet kicking a Hi Lift jack and my head next to a Heater Buddy

I realized it could always use more storage room and space. Used cargo boxes are cheap and do look good.
If that means no more clearing parking garages fine.

even moving cross country, it will have more room. Off roading, it can include room for a spare CV.
Don’t need my rack for solar as I already have a Renogy 100w flexible panel adhered to the shell.

Probably not gonna get a Sherpa Crow’s nest 48” topper rack any time soon as I don’t see any for sale used and they’re pretty expensive to just end up having to redo the solar
Not to mention I have no idea if the shell is reinforced and can handle putting tracks first (required) or what tracks to put (I believe Sherpa recommends Yakima brand)

so may as well put traction boards on the center of cab rack (to get it out of the bed) with a Plano case on each side for total of two.
The more shit you can carry the better. Because the alternative is having a storage unit making trips back and forth to it, or getting some expensive big long diesel truck that breaks requiring cab lift off the frame repairs.

not to mention the ability such a setup has in other scenarios. Moving cross country pull over at night and sleep.
Off roading trip actually spend time there days/week self sustaining instead of going there for only one day with nothing to experience 1 or 2 trails in the area far out instead of 7.

made this mistake in CO. Drove to do Black Bear Pass and Imogene then went home. Would rather have camped out and done the entire Alpine Loop as there’s many more good trails there than just those two. Not to mention if you bring people with you which makes it more fun.

it looks like Black Bear is still closed for now. For maintenance. but even going there when it opens is a long ass drive and would be better to split it into two stretches with a break.

I do carry shovel and hi lift. They are cheap. Have used them many times.

I am not a fan of RTT’s. Get bit by a snake “hold on let me fold my tent”
“No I can’t move my truck”
Inability to sleep in a cheap shell you already have stealth camping securely anywhere if you need to, instead of an expensive RTT, when a ground tent likely works the same but significantly cheaper and lighter + portable. Shell can sleep, fit gear, and carry things while RTT cannot and is added weight.

Theres a 4Runner near me that must haul 1k lbs of stuff on the sides and roof to wal mart and back every week.
