My truck developed a loud hum or whine or maybe a howl at around 38mph. Goes away around 41mph-ish. Does not go away if I put it in 4-H or matter what gear I'm in (engine rpm). I have not replaced the CV needle bearing.

2016 TRD OR. 115,000 miles. Toyo Open Country AT3 275/70r17 with about 5000 miles on them. Bilstein lift, about 2-2.5". I brought it in for a tire rotation, an alignment and inspection. They said my front driver's wheel bearings were making noise so they replaced those but it still makes the same damn noise. Nothing else looked like a problem to them.

Any thoughts on this? Suggestions? I have a major road trip coming up in two weeks. 20230305_112439-01-01.jpg

Sounds like the notorious differential whine noise . I’m surprised you are just getting it now . Mine has done this since new . I’m at 46k miles and the tone has not changed been the same the whole time . Those tires you have do make a lot of noise u might also be hearing the hum from those tires .

Thanks. Searched for info on the diff noise and I dont think it's that. It doesn't sound like its coming from the back, definately sounds/feels like its coming from the front. Also, its only right around 40mph. I dont hear it above 42mph so I don't think its the tires. The Toyos are quieter than what I had on.

I believe there was a TSB for the Serpentine belt that made a similar noise. Maybe that?

Yes, ac on and off. Blower off and full blast. Sounds like a rotational noise....woo...woo...woo....

As I accelerate it starts around 38, goes away around 42. As I decellerate it starts at 42ish and goes away. By hearing isnt great but I cant hear other noises at slow speed or idle

Certainly sounds rotational by your description. If they already replaced wheel bearings have you ruled out cv axle or some sort of driveline/driveshaft angle issues or u joints since you have some lift?

Did you check the working angles of your ujoints after the lift? 2" lift might need additional 2 deg shim under overload spring to compensate.
Shims or cb spacer. Better off with shims from my experience.

Maybe the rear wheel bearings. I would expect those to have more problems than the fronts.

Could be CV axle or driveline. I was hoping the shop I went to would have checked those for wear. All they identified as a problem was the front driver side wheel bearing, so they replaced that and problem remains.

I dont know how to check any of that. Maybe I need to find a new shop.

I had a similar problem with my 2016 OR, a “humming” noise between 48 and 52MPH. It was the rear bearings, could verify by lifting truck and spinning rear wheels, you could hear a slight grinding noise. Had about 110,000 miles at the time. I found it strange that both sides were bad. Only issue I have ever had with the truck. Had them changed and rides nice and silent now.

It ended up being passenger side rear wheel bearing
