It gives it charm doesn't it? Even things like the giant push lock dead center at the highest part of the glovebox.

I always liked the little pen tray at the top of the center stack. Perfect place to set you fries, at least until you hit the gas in 1st gear and launched them all over.

The wagons had a storage compartment in the back under the floor too, it was surprisingly useful.

I think it was well though lt out but it was weird because it was Swedish

It's too bad we didn't get a manual version (AFAIK).

That's right! And it was just a straight up piece of stained wood with metal edging and upholstery right?
Scandinavian design is minimalist but they do get practical haha

It's surprising that some engines were so overbuilt, like the 2JZ and OM617.

Yeah it was. Really thin carpet on top, a hole with a metal insert to make the handle to lift it by.

Ours also had port fuel injection, to which dad compared every other vehicle we owned that followed. If it had port fuel injection, it was deemed “sporty, like the Volvo”.

I think it's great. And a DIY replacement if needed.

I'm convinced people get tow mirror extensions out here. Plus everyone swaps on super duty tow mirrors onto their GMT400 trucks. It's a disease.

If you have a 2500 dually GMT400 sure but why do the 1500 V6 single cab short bed trucks have them too.

Yes and no. Some older engines are that way because they didn't have as much knowledge on materials and alloys. Those engines were over built to be reliable as at the time, for Toyota, they were still trying to gain market share as ultra reliable cars compared to the domestic offerings. And, it worked. Now they are in the spot to cut costs on designs while maintaining the reliability, but they don't over build them the same way they used to. The Mercedes you posted is a different story. Its diesel, combustion in a diesel is very high pressure and for a motor to hold up to that you have iron block, iron heads, and big beefy bearings, and big beefy head bolts to hold it all together. By their nature, diesels are tuff engines. Modern diesels have struggled due to the complexity to incorporate the emissions control equipment on them across the board. So you may find it surprising, but the reality is they really aren't when you emerse yourself into what was going on at the time.

@01x4 If I keep looking at this picture, I might do something crazy. I like the slab sides, the rear quarter shoulders, and the properly located Darren dip on the rear door.
