Maybe one day he will be able to step back and see the whole picture... I actually enjoy looking at the history of cars and car companies and how their philosophy change with time based on all sorts of factors. Of course I'm biased but it's part of what I love on my AMG, the m156 engine is iconic. Sure, people will argue that the motors that came after it are more powerful (turbos=better) and more efficient. But those people lose sight on that also signals a change of the times. Gone are the days that car companies can send their engineers into a room and say "build us a 500hp NA V8, design it how you want it to be." And then they take that engine and shove it into EVERYTHING. Compact cars. Minivans. SUVs. Family haulers. It was absolutely nutty. It will never happen again and so enjoying what cars are and what they represent is important. Of course there's always the argument that things change and are indeed better now. Some guy probably wrote a letter to his local newspaper waxing romance and sadness about when the hand crank disappeared for the electric starter way back in the day. And like him, I might be wrong.

The 1FZ is excellent at getting 13-14mpg in all conditions and with all fuels. Except towing, then it's instant 6mpg

GMT400 is the herpes of the used vehicle market anyway, can't get rid of them. If you're on the east coast apparently they're valuable too. Here they come with every unlicensed contractor and meth head copper theif.

    That, I most certainly noticed

Got an average 21mpg in the GX, and that included going over and coming back through Pacheco Pass which is impressive

But do notice if you step on that gas, the V8 guzzles it with no real noticeable 'punch'

If youre cruising at say 75mph and mat the gas does it drop one gear to 4 or two down to 3? I looked at swapping an a750 into a340 equipped trucks and it looks easy enough but I'm curious as to it's behavior.

Can find out tomorrow, I'm normally on cruise control at 75 with no reason to jump but last I recall it drops down 1 gear

Transmission definitely isn't holding this thing back, and it didn't hunt at all on Pacheco Pass

I liked the a750 in the second gens. I'm investigating it as a swap for 1st gen folks with aftermarket computers since it's less wasteful and allows you to run more over geared and get away with it on the highway.

Interesting, didn't know that was a thing

Having boost you'd have more reason to run 5 (well 4 + OD) gears, and being auto means you're not dropping boost between gears

No you were right it's 5 gears, OD is a gear. 3 under drive gears, a 1:1 gear, and an overdrive gear. I don't think I'd want an auto in this truck and with flatshift setup I don't have to lose boost between gears anymore either (though it's a bit extreme around town )
