Trailhunter and PRO come with hybrid, no option there. But the other TRD trims you can get either engine option.

They already announced the manual will be available in the SR, TRD Sport, and TRD Off Road.

noted. I must’ve misunderstood the options when I read/watched the release. Nevertheless, it seems there will be greater customization with the NA V6 vs. the forced induction I4.

Not sure where you got that idea, but turbocharged engines are typically easier and less expensive to customize than NA engines, V6 or otherwise.

adding a supercharger to the 3.5 L V6 yields greater output than a turbo 4. There’s no replacement for this placement.

Adding a supercharger to the V6 is an expensive endeavor. The old, and often debunked adage about displacement is a worthless argument.

I would argue an equal amount of money put into the Turbo-4 and the V6 will allow the smaller displacement engine to both outperform the larger one in virtually every metric, including longevity.

geumble grumble. You think pushing or pressure through a smaller engine to yield the same output of less pressure in a larger engine isn’t going to add more stress and increase likelihood of failure?

for someone who has a corsair as their profile icon I would assume you know better than to think higher pressure systems are less likely to failed and lower pressure systems.

It seems you are making the naïve assertion both engines were designed and stressed for the same amount of output per unit if displacement; sorry, incorrect. The fact is, engines designed from the factory for turbocharged applications are designed to allow power production per unit of displacement many times that of engines designed to be normally aspirated.

Much easier to tune a turbo charged engine. I'm sure the aftermarket tuners will be all over this I4 engine once it comes out. But yes adding more power from the engine will just stress something else down the line. I know that VW MK7 GTIs even at a stage 1 tune the stock clutch would start to slip as the stock clutch couldn't handle the power, necessitating a beefier clutch/flywheel = more $$$ to spend.
Will be interesting to see how Toyota does this with the manual option. Hopefully its the same power output as the auto tranny and not detuned as some other manufactures do with cars where they offer a manual (i'm looking at you Golf R)

I think it’s an awesome upgrade for sure. Super interested in fuel economy with the new setup. I don’t have a dog in the fight anyway. Trading in my ‘18 6MT for a linear power curve rig.

The manual does indeed have less power according to press release:
    270 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft.of torque
and the auto with the same engine:
    278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft.of torque

They gave reasons for it in one of the videos, wondering how much people will push the power limits.

Hypothetically, if 5th Gen doesn't come in manual, you manual folks going to stop buying tacomas?

    NOTE: I didn't start a new thread :p

Yes, I’d stop buying new Tacomas. I’d love to have a pro, but since it only comes in auto now it’s off my list. The new 4Runner is coming out with a manual so I’m heavily leaning toward keeping my current Tacoma and adding a new 4Runner.
