FWIW I drive a lot on FSRs and bottom rear shock hanger gets peppered with rocks well as well as other random spots on frame. Exposed metal/frame can be seen, nothing is “making its way in”.

Don’t believe everything you read on the internez. If you would like, I can snap a few pics of my tacos undercarriage of said areas when I go pick up my truck today.

    Haha!

If your truck is brand spanking new and never been driven, you can do rubberized if you would like. Get it professionally done though at a shop with good reviews.

Otherwise I would do FF and cal it a day.

I still FF suspension components and random exposed metal parts underneath my truck twice a year.

This is interesting because I've always heard that rubberized coatings are the devil and basically sabotaging the frame long term. Do FSR's have galvanized frames?

That’s what everyone says yes, I think cuz folks apply rubberized coatings over rust and that actually accelerates rusting process.

FSR is a Fire Service Road sir.

I definitely don't won't to rubberize. Cosmoline would be a decent option, but I'd have to remove the rubber most likely. I will probably just use fluid film or surface shield and assume it will creep into any area of the rubber that lets in moisture.

Does fluid film work for you?

If a hard or semi hard coating gets compromised then fluids can surely make their way underneath over time. Not always, but it is certainly possible.

Same reason why on rusty Toyota frames if you go chipping away at some surface rust you may end up chipping away what looked like good condition adjacent coating and still find surface rust underneath. I’ve chipped off spots that started as an exposed .5-1” rust patch and not hit good frame surface til 2-3” beyond that.

Regardless if it was me I wouldn’t be worried about it coming clean like that from factory. I’d just blast over it with whatever my favorite rust protectant is making sure it was something compatible with rubberized-like coatings. The rubberized coat is already a semi fixed/solid coat. I’d do something semi-fluid over it, like consistency of fluid film or similar. Idk if fluid film screws with rubber, I recall someone saying it may have caused some swelling of rubber components.

Sir, leave that gooey stuff applied at the factory, it will help you in the long run. You trying to scrape it off will just make it worse.

Long story but I actually met with a guy from Toyota that was involved in this rust proofing campaign on 2018+ Tacomas. That stuff is good and is there to help you.

FF is good but washed away quickly and needs to be reapplied at least twice a year. Cosmo line definitely lasts longer.

I'm think an oil based coating might degrade the rubber, but hopefully the oil will continue to creep, protecting any exposed area.

Yes I’ve heard something like that, I haven’t had issues yet though.

It's usually a good idea to get underneath the vehicle if you can before you buy it. You could have addressed your concerns with the dealer before purchasing the truck.

I think the dealer owes him a PRO, it’s only fair.
