Funny story from this years Iron Butt Rally as told to me by the perpetrator

Traffic accident blocking all lanes west on I-40, I think he said in AZ? Rally competitor was running tight on time when he ran into a miles long backup and Waze and Garmin both put his ETA to the checkpoint at more than 8 hours but he had to be there within less than that or DNF. He saw another IBR competitor slightly ahead of him in traffic. He rode up the shoulder roughly 1/4 mile to meet up so they could talk. Realizing they both were in trouble if they couldn't get through the mess somehow they decided to take the shoulder, going the wrong way, back to where there was a gated crossover for service vehicle access. This was a distance of several miles and they both hoped no oncoming emergency vehicles were headed their way. Approaching the gate the person relating the tale to me began flashing his lights and honking his horn to get the attention of a worker on the inside of the gated area. When the worker approached, my riding friend told the worker that the police at the accident scene had asked them to come back to the area and have the crossover opened to allow some of the backed up traffic to pass through to the service road to alleviate the back up to the accident scene. The worker, assuming they were legit, opened the gate and thus the 2 riders were able to pass through and make their check point on time. I will NOT be revealing any names for the protection of the less than innocent players involved. I will only say hearing the tale in person had me laughing so hard my face hurt.

Agreed, motos to the front of every line every time. The ferries around here get so choked up with all the tourists in the summer that you end up waiting many hours or even obernight in a car. Motos can always go to the front with the bicycles

But this wasn't a ferry it was just on the road. What makes the bike that more important than the car waiting in line? I think the flagger had a right to be pissed. She has all that mess to deal with plus you running up the shoulder. Just my opinion.

In what way did I effect anything she was doing? Riding at 5mph up a shoulder and stopping at the front of the cars has no impact on her ability to stand and hold a sign.

What makes bikes more important is we can’t just roll up the windows and turn on the AC to avoid the dust clouds from the vehicles in front of us. We either choke on it or slow way down, spread out the traffic and slow down the entire construction process.

I’ll preface this by saying that I understand all sides, I live in a state where filtering isn’t legal, we don’t even have a “dead light” law but most cops don’t care either way.

I won’t say it’s because a bike is “more important” than a car, but filtering takes unnecessary gaps out of traffic, on my commute with local construction and detours it’s not uncommon for me to ride about a mile at very low speeds, sometime low enough the speedometer doesn’t register because traffic is backed up at a stop sign but if I stop and build a gap it messes with traffic flow behind me, if I try to ride to minimize the gap I’m constantly working clutch control and/or dragging the rear brake for balance, not only does my bike get hot but I also get hot to the point of I’ve been dizzy if I wear my jacket.
It’s also a proven safety issue, motorcycles are more likely to be rear ended than other vehicles, if traffic is stopped at a light and you filter up you are less likely to be in an accident than waiting behind a stopped vehicle.

All that said I would likely only filter in situations like @crazysccrmd was in.

Long time lurker in this thread, some pretty good stuff in here. Good group of riders in here.
Lane splitting is currently illegal in Colorado, (That may change soon) but it is legal to ride the shoulder if traffic is stopped, as long as the bike rejoins traffic when it starts to move again. The chick with the flag, just smile and wave.
We can run HOV lanes at no charge/no passenger.
We can also run red lights after sitting for a couple minutes and it's safe to do so. The smaller bikes don't have enough ass to trip the stupid sensors. Plenty of cops ride around here and they know what's up.

It is just something else she has to do, now get you back in line with traffic when you were already there. She is not expecting you to be riding on the shoulder. Your comment about dust and A/C are mute, that is part of riding a motorcycle. Not sure how you being in line with the rest of traffic is slowing anything down. Again why should you move ahead of everyone else in line waiting to go? Do you jump in front of people at the check out line because you have one item and they have 100? I'm not seeing the difference.

Motorcycles being in line with everyone else slows down the time it takes to get the entire column of vehicles through the construction because we aren’t driving 15’ behind the vehicle in front like the rest of the cars. Every motorcycle is now leaving 100’ feet in front of them to avoid the dust slowing down and spreading out the column of traffic.

I’m assuming you’ve never ridden a motorcycle in heavy construction zones with dirt roads if you don’t understand the point.

Lol nice. No one responded after my post with the 6 rules so I wasn't sure if we all threw in the towel on it or not.

    All of this

filtering is just a more efficient use of the roadway, and has safety benefits as well.

I'm fortunate enough to live in CA where it's not only legal, it's encouraged.

Not legal to filter in Michigan, I wish it was. I wouldnt do it all the time just because I could, but there are times when it would be nice.

Driving or riding on the street has nothing to do with standing in line at a store. Not a very good analogy. Also if you don’t see the difference then you sir are part of the problem. If you don’t think it’s right then don’t do it. If another person does it are you personally effected? Fucking key board cops bug the hell out of me.

It really should be legal nationwide, if not worldwide.

Most of europe allows for it, 3rd world countries with worse traffic than us have proven it's efficacy (Looking at you India)

Wifey was leaving a few ago and said I needed to come out side as someone wanted to talk to me about my scooter.

A young 20 something kid was walking the street doing the sales thing of new roofs. Seen the bike and wanted to talk real quick. 15 min. later he is gone and not one sales pitch. The whole conversation was about bikes. :D The sales kid has a CRF230L.
