I should say my gal still owns a 1987 Celica GTS and it only had one single recharge when it was 6 years old. That is amazing itself. I still take her car out every couple months to run it and that AC blows cold. That car only has 76,000 miles on it. (cause I've done all the driving with my two vehicles for the last 30 years)

Yeah these are very simple single speed compressors......like everything of old they can last like a push rod engine....

The newer toyotas now use a 2 speed compressor.........wonder how those fair.......

I've owned a bunch of Toyota trucks since the 80s and the AC has always worked as advertised. When I owned my 2nd Gen, I was helping prerun a race in Baja in Sept. Temps were 118º and I had to wait in the desert for an hour to refuel the prerunner. The truck idled for that hour, AC keeping me cool, no overheating, worked perfectly. I am a big fan of the Tacoma's AC.

My '04 with 72k miles is on the original charge. Since day one it has never been very cold in use, but it hasn't changed since new. I used it today. I put the fan on level 2 and put the cool on my feet, using fresh air. I was comfy in 0-20 mph traffic on I-5 in Seattle today.

1998, 230k original in Florida.... Until 2 months ago the compressor spontaneously blew up o_O but as the original owner, so it's hard to complain after 25 years of cold AC !

    98 blows ice cold

04 is mediocre. And fluctuates between blowing kind of cold and not really/cool.

Have to figure out what’s going on in the 04.

Not a Tacoma, but my wife's now former 2007 Highlander never had a charge. I don't think that my now former 2006 Tundra did either, but I'm not sure if they had to do anything with the AC when the they did the timing belt changes.

I wouldn't use the cans. If its leaking freon the oil is also leaking out. Over time this can cause the compressor to seize. AC oil also usually has dye so you can spot leaks.

Totally disagree.....if the leak is from a 'high side' and leaking very slowly....

it could draw down all freon and leave the oil.

There's no way to know for sure........

if you add oil u could fry it.....not adding oil is safer bet....

these last so long by slowly weeping around that seal.......
so they slowly lose 134a.....or the seal gets gnawd.

If the compressor is just burnt up....that's either from running low freon, or just plain age and wore out.

or someone just 'topped off' and sent the high side to like 300psi.....

Probably the worst thing you can do to the compressor........is let set for months or years unused........that means that seal is gonna dry out....

Forty years ago they said to run your window ac units and auto ac systems at least once a month to make them last for a long long time........even in the winter time....
    doesn't anybody remember that ?
