My 2009 four banger. Five speed extracab Tacoma has a light on in the dash.
It wasn't there. Ever. And I just started the truck and its on. And staying on. No accidents. No trauma at all.
To me it looks like a traction control issue. But the code reads a fuel evaporative system issue. (And I didn't write down the code number)
The fuel cap is relatively new. But may have been loose. However, I haven't gotten gas I'm about a week.
(Just trying to rule out the simplest)
The truck still starts. Runs and drives great.
    What is going on?
    Thank you.20230818_191429.jpg

If the check engine light is on the traction control is disabled so the light will accompany the engine light.

EVAP problems can be tricky to diagnose especially without a bi-directional scan tool and smoke machine.

Aftermarket gas caps dont work well on 2nd gens especially the locking ones so if the gas cap is suspect start there.

I reset the code with my Harbor Freight scanner and tightened the fuel cap. That didn't seem fully closed.
The lights have been out all day today. Probably 4 stops. Probably 20 miles.

Time will tell, EVAP test runs after the truck has been off for around 5-8 hrs depending on temperature so it may be a few days before it runs the test.

Mine has been bad since I bought the truck in 2013...used...
Apparently it can be damaged by overfilling ONE TIME...I always stop at the click...but if the previous owner was always squeezing it to even $$$...
$30 harbor freight scanner reset every time it rains...Something about it raining triggers the evap codes..
    5 codes...
180,000+ miles...no issues yet with fuel evaporation ;)

I top that truck up every time I get gas. Lots of times until it shoots out of the filler hole.
If the cannister is full of fuel, I know why.

If you ever have to deal with getting the charcoal granules out of all the EVAP lines when the canister comes apart you won't want to do that anymore, I've had to do that on quite a few and it's a royal pain. You pretty much have to have a person on each end of the line with a blow nozzle and keep blowing it back and forth until it all comes out.
I had one so bad it dumped so much charcoal into the fuel tank that it plugged up the sock on the fuel pump and caused it to fail, had to replace the pump, canister, purge valve, vent valve, clean all the lines, and clean the tank.
I don't remember what the bill was but it wasn't cheap.
