I would wait until '25 or '26 for all the issues to be resolved and supplies (and rates) to improve (hopefully driving costs down if only slightly). No hurry here with a '19.

---- Toyota put an 8-speed unit on the last years of the 200-series Land cruiser and LX570 with 3.31 gears. 15 MPG still. I doubt adding 2 more gears would help. The 3UR was not designed to be easy on fuel. Maybe if the added the same dual-injection system like the 3.5, it might have helped. It was Toyota's Big Block, the Japanese 454.

--- 228 HP & 243 LB-FT alone will make any prior Tacoma engine feel lethargic. 270 & 317 will even better.

--- They didn't fire Akio, he still holds much power as chairman. Like or not He IS the Japanese Auto Industry. I believe that it was panned for him to "step down" to look good that Toyota is changing direction on BEVs. Akio was/is never against BEVs, but merely was speaking what numerous people were already thinking. he was even given an award for such, Disruptor of the Year. I believe that Toyota and the other Japanese manufacturers know electric has a future and are betting on it after doing what they think is a better approach. Watch Japan strike Lighting of their own over the next 3 years.

---- @shakerhood, @kakwvu, @SwollenGoat -- GM has 2 2.7 turbos, one is light-duty internals that is not tunable at all and then one that is tunable. The Tacoma's 2.4 turbo will have the same internals with the SR's 228 losing a oil cooler.

--- After driving my parent's Volt, the smooth instant punch of a electric motor is addicting, makes me giggly honestly. But what is concerning me is, at the least, you're trading Big Oil for Big Electric. and maybe out of the frying pan and into the fire.

---- Well put. While I like hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and EVs. The politics of it kills me. I'm would not call myself a environmentalist, I do believe in trying to do better, if something can be design to be cleaner, more efficient and do what we need done. The auto industry isn't alone in polluting. I'm interested in the Shipping (Cargo and Cruising) industry. Those big-ass cruise ships ain't easy on fuel nor on NOx.......

In addition, if we want to clean the environment, we need to drain the fuel of the World War II warships that sank, and there is about 7,000 to be exact. After 70 years in the salt water. many are starting to leak. That's a big problem. No politician ever talks about that....

---- If Toyota wants to stay relevant in todays world, they may have to change their philosophy of engineering, the world is much faster than before.

---- I wonder how much it will cost the replace the battery in a F150 PowerBoost. And I bet you'd have the lift the cab off the frame to get to it. Not only that but LiON batteries need to be liquid cooled. That ain't gonna be pretty.

NiMH batteries aren't as efficient, but they are air-cooled and easier to recycle.

That IS Toyota though. It's one of the philosophy in The Toyota Way. Do you want QDR (quality, durability, reliability) or the latest and greatest tech that hasn't been proven??

Fired, stepdown, whatever. Nothing more than a PR stunt. Akio is right about BEV, they aren’t ready for the masses, no matter how many people want it, the infrastructure isn’t there yet, and may not be for 10-15 years.

My wife used to be a bookkeeper for an e-recycling company. Which to the general public sounds great, recycling all of our outdated electronics, which these days seem to become irrelevant by the time you get it home from the Apple Store.

What they do is harvest all the precious metals, then what is ever left is sold to the highest bidder in China, loaded on a shipping container then back to China it goes, they rifle through it, some components get installed in new electronics then shipped back to the US, the rest either gets burn and put in landfills, or worse just left out in the open. All of it is extremely toxic, no precautions are made, I have seen it my very own eyes. At one point the place caught fire, which made an even bigger toxic mess now airborne in the form of smoke and gasses.

We can’t even get that or plastic recycling right, even Greenpeace recognizes it as a fools errand, now throw massive automotive batteries into the mix. It is a total environmental disaster.

They sold a hell of a lot of rear drum brakes vs rear discs than the others combined.

---- I don't know if that's is a complement or not lol. @Carmaker1 much more knowledgeable and eloquent than I. But I can assure you that I am not him. Just a dumbass Sammich with a keyboard who is long-winded though, I am sorry about. I'll try to shorten my posts. (I'm sure y'all are teasing around, but I could be a little more concise.) I guess in some regards I am a part of a conspiracy though.....

---- Yeah, I now remember seeing some EcoBoost F150 jobs where the cabs came off.

--- Thank You for condensing all that down to PR stunt. I couldn't think of that, I'm pretty bad at not getting to the point fast enough.

I'm also not surprised by the e-waste recycling. Sounds very similar to what Uncle Sam did during Cash-for-Clunkers. Looks good on the front end, but had little-to-no or worse effects.

You’re welcome, most of the crap I post on here is done on the fly, me choosing “fired” was the wrong wordage. PR stunt didn’t come to me until you corrected me.

Yeah it is all feel good measures. As they say “The road to Hell is paved with good intentions”. If we truly wanted to stop human influence on the environment, would should be promoting our own extinction. Of course that would go over like a lead ballon. According the fossil records, the planet did quite well without us.

Earth is a self-correcting system, so we will be kept "in check" one way or the other (hello, Hilary). As George Carlin once noted, perhaps our only purpose on earth is to create plastic bags.

    Yep, love Carlin.

There have been 5 known mass extinctions, arguably now in the 6th, mostly caused by us. This go around we might be the only species aware of our own demise, yet do little to stop it.

Unbridled consumerism got us into this mess, certainly more of it will get us out. /sarcasm…

    Lol!

They are gonna save us all!

Think that is why figures like Musk have such a cult following, he is telling people they can have their cake and eat it too, and they believe it.

Not sure living a life of excess is going to save the planet.

Have a friend living in a 250 sq/ft tiny home built from scraps, powered by solar, doesn’t own a vehicle, walks or bicycles everywhere. She is making a difference, people like Musk only want to make money. Going from exploiting oil, to exploiting minerals, which very well could be worse for the environment. Just the infrastructure alone destroys habit.

    Holocene Extinction

The days of giving your old car to your kids are going to come to an end once that old car needs a $20K replacement battery. Those cars will just end up in the junk yard. It will be interesting to see how many miles the various EVs will go before needing a new battery.
