We have a 1st generation PS3 and we've had this thing since its launch in 2006. We've starting to experience some failures on the Blue-ray side of things. My husband has vacuumed it out and done all kinds of research..... and it appears, the blue-ray laser might be on its last leg.

So, instead of throwing money at it....perhaps its time to get a new one.

This thing is one of the original 60gb. According to WIKI, you can only get the 160gb or the 320gb currently. Is that true?

What's everyone getting and what types of problems are you having? (if any)

that laser is easy to replace and only cost about 20$ IIR.

i got a 250GB for 350$. 250GB was the largest you could buy when i purchased mine.

    Janster ,

one thing to keep in mind if you use your PS3 to play PS2 or PS1 games , the newer consoles are not backward compatible like the old ones .

Still have my original 1st gen 60gig PS3, and still going strong. Just the occasional freeze here and there, but no big deal.

Personally if I needed a new one I would get the 160gig, because it's less expensive, and honestly who needs 320 gigabytes on a PS3?

I'm in about the same situation , but I have an old 80 gig fat , I think a 160 gig slim would be lots for me anyways .

I got a 1st generation PS3 and all I did was swap out the 20 gb HDD for a 500 GB HDD that I bought for $80 plus tax, And mine is going strong, I Had to clean mine out a couple of time cause it sounds like a goddamn hair dryer going. I had replaced a laser before on a buddy's it was super easy, you can even watch the tutorial on youtube on how to do it.

Exactly, I've had my 60gb for over 4 years now and I'm just running into the problem of not having enough memory.

Where did you find a blu-ray laser replacement for $20? (sounds used or cheap).
My husband searched and they're $100 or more/new.

Yeah, that and all the other things the original ones had that the newer ones don't have. Granted, we haven't played any PS2 game in 4 years.....so, not too concerned about that.

We just didn't wanna start throwing money at it chasing a problem. We use it more for watching movies. Everytime we watch a movie, it locks up, and after getting the disc out and try again, it doesn't recognize the disc/get an error. Saturday, we didn't make it 10 minutes thru a movie. Yesterday, husband vacuumed it out, backed-it-up, and did a complete system rebuild. We managed to get 3/4 of the way thru a movie last night..... He's frustrated. Still researching....

The 160gb would be more than plenty. We had about 10gb room left on this one.....

Is it easy to install? I thought of replacing mine because the games & movies are taking long to load.

very easy got my done in about and hour. There is a step by step video to follow on youtube that shows you where every screw that needs to be removed is and all the ribbon cables that need to be disconnected. As far as tools, all you need is a 10 torx bit for the security screw and a good medium size phillips head and small phillips head screwdriver.

I'm going to have to replace my laser. It struggled last night loading a blu-ray movie. I'm planning on ordering one from ebay.
