In the initial few seconds I was furious ... why were they allowing an aircraft to fly directly at show center-hoping it would make the turn safely !!!

    Oh. Hey.

    that's cool.

I was at a California airshow and watched an RC jet doing aerobatics over the runway.

It was moving so fast in the small acro box, with its instantaneous turns to the point it was somewhat difficult to follow, I truly don't know how they could fly like that. It was like a computer program was doing the flying.

My reflexes were never that good. Respect.

Yes, it was. This happened to it in Jan. of 2015; he had a catastrophic engine failure on takeoff at 80kts and 300 feet AGL, with him and three passengers. Less than 70 seconds from wheels off the runway to putting it down in the back yard of a house 3800 feet from the end of the runway. It slid into the trees you see. Tore the engine and left wing off; he had some fractures and a head injury but recovered. The other three people walked away with bruises. The engine was less than 100 hours out after a TBO, it was discovered that a circlip on the crankshaft counterweight retaining pin had been incorrectly installed. The pin is as big around as a mop handle. It backed out, the counterweight came off and went through the block, taking both magnetos and a cylinder with it. Not much you can do at his airspeed and altitude.

He has a really nice Beech Baron now.

Wow, devastating...at least all souls survived.

Worst possible scenario...at least he went multi with the replacement so will have a better chance should lightning strike a second time

Wow that’s a nasty wreck. Hopefully he stays proficient with the Baron so that second engine will actually save him instead of flying to the crash as so many light twins do. Looked like a cool Bo.

That situation causing the engine failure is what led to AD 2023-05-16

Very interesting. I wonder how many failures there have been directly related to the improper installation of the circlip? I had mentioned that the engine had undergone an overhaul less than 100 hours before the failure, Jay (my friend and the plane's owner) said that the most common period for an engine failure was around 100-120 hrs after an overhaul, as improper rebuild mistakes would take about that long to show themselves.

One of the saddest things about his crash was that he had installed a new G1000 instrument panel just a couple of months before the engine failure. We had gone to Oshkosh in 2014 and he had ordered the new panel instruments there. Good thing there was insurance.

I haven't flown with him since his crash; he moved about a year after that, and I've pretty much lost touch with him. We worked together before he moved so I saw him several times a week, but he took a civilian job closer to where he did his Army Reserve work. He's a Nurse Anesthetist in both jobs, and made Colonel last year (0-6).

Thinking about installing BAS inertia reel seatbelts in my Cardinal. The question is to rotary buckle or to not rotary buckle....The airline pilot in me wants rotary buckles but I don't know if it's worth the $810 extra.

It's what your primal (training) instincts will do in the time of need...without thought. Many peeps have died in a building fire at an unlocked door where they pulled instead of just pushed.

Which one is quickest and easiest to release? Isn't there one made that all you do is smack it with your fist or palm to release it? I would want one that takes only one motion to unbuckle when you're upside down and under water, or just got stopped by a tree and the flames are licking at you.
