We have a 2008 Tacoma with the automatic transmission. The throttle lag is really bad until it shifts into 3rd gear. Is this common? Is this a computer software programming issue because I note the transmission downshifts hard on a hill after I punch the throttle peddle hard? Is the problem due to emission control throttle settings in the computer? It feels like a governor setting issue in the electronic throttle controller circuit. There is no real feeling in the pedal travel span until the transmission sharply downshifts -- irritating. We bought the truck used from a car lot and we have no maintenance records history for it. I bought a factory engine manual for it. Any reference sections addressing throttle adjustments within the factory manual would be appreciated.:hattip:

Have you considered a "Sprint Booster" or a similar product? I have a '14, 4 cyl, auto and use the Sprint Booster. I've had it for a few years and never regretted the purchase.

You need a throttle controller, like JGO mentioned, eliminates a lot of the lag.
I’ve been using a 9drive, it’s a Chinese version of the pedal commander, sprint booster, but cost around $50.

No idea, how anyone could drive the 2.7L as their only, without a throttle controller.
I just had mine disconnected for a few days and wow,,,I couldn’t deal with that on a constant.
A 24’ Ryder rental truck, is the only other vehicle I’ve ever drove when you floor the gas pedal,,,
nothing happens, your just puttin up that hill!

I go into fields around here a lot. I turn the Sprint Booster off when I do; I find the lag helpful in taller wet grass. Should I forget to turn it back on, it does not take long to something is not right, big difference.
