I have a question if anyone can share the knowledge. Needing to run a wire through cinder blocks, is it better to drill the hole through the mortar or through the block?

 

Id go through block.

Milwaukee "hammer shockwave" masonry drill bits work well for that.

 

Quick easy project finished today. I live in a small 60yr old house, no handrail on stairs. Never been an issue until my Mom who hasn't traveled much since before covid agreed to come for a visit. She's 90 and insisted in sleeping in a basement bedroom!

 

Nice clean lines! Has the home ever been sold with the missing handrails? Down here in the States I don’t think very many of the 50 states would allow that to be sold without an essential safety item (I’m not sure but there’s probably some southern states that DGAF).

 

Wyoming doesnt care lol. The home we bought, the two stairs didn't really have handrails. Downstairs none at all...upstairs has one for like half of it. The inspector noted it as a "not to current code but code at time of building" pretty much

 

Thanks! I bought the house 38 years ago, pretty sure it wasn't inspected then. It would probably fail inspection today with no handrail in Alberta.

No , part of the siting variance and the geotechnical report is retain all natural vegetation in the area between the house and natural boundary of the ocean

there are more trees to the right of that pic too , none of them hurt the view in my opinion

I was just thinking about throwing a rough slab across there and having a drink!

 

I'm adding some shelfs in the garage. I would rather hang them than use posts sitting on the ground or 45deg braces on the wall behind them. The black arrow is pointing to 1 of the 2x4 beams in the ceiling. What is a decent way to attach the vertical 4x4 to that beam? I can brace the beam if needed but I don't think it will be since it's so close to the end.

The small gap between them is for the 5/8" ceiling drywall.

 

If you're willing to cut into the drywall, I'd try notching the 4x4 so you have more surface area to glue/screw the 4x4 to the rafter. That should make a pretty strong connection. It's probably not to code, and I wouldn't be putting spare transmissions on it but it should be pretty strong.

 

How much mass on the shelves?

At my last house I did nearly the same but with chains instead of 4x4's - to hold up the hanging mass so to speak. I'm not sure why you would need 4x4s unless you are storing your tungsten stash up there.

EDIT PS I first put up a strong 2x ledger double lagged to every stud, then made and attached the structure for my shelving. I attached that to the ledger and it was actually pretty strong cantilevered, so I covered it with 3/4 plywood, then finally put the chains up (stout chain) in eye bolts through doubled up 2x6 laying over the rafters. Stored ALL our seasonal garbage up there. Christmas lights were the only thing with much mass.
