OEM Front Brakes BS

22,000 gentle miles, no tows no heavy loads, relatively flat terrain, mixed highway/suburban driving and this is what I got! No warning from the sensor until I heard metal to metal scraping. Never in my life have I seen a new vehicle, be it a truck or an SUV needing a brake job after only 22k miles, and I've owned a lot of new cars. What king of a sh!t brakes Toyota puts in those trucks? BTW: Toyota sys it's normal, not kidding.

Spent Saturday afternoon replacing pads and rotors with:

There is no Fing way those brakes have only 22K miles with no towing. No way. You the original owner?

 

Also, if you look at the pads, the squeal arm is only on one of the pads, so I would question why you have uneven pad wear.

Also, 22k miles, are you doing a lot of mountain descending without engine braking? Or autocross? I know you said you have owned many cars, but the Tacoma uses most of the braking power from the front and the rear drums may outlast the life of the truck, so it’s different that cars with more evenly spread out braking between front and rear discs they have…

I have a '19 OR DCSB 4x4 as well, but mine has 10k more miles and I HAVE been towing quite a bit and do not have signs of needing a brake job anytime soon.

Is this just one side or do your pics show all 4 pads?

And what sensor are you talking about? The little squealer on the pad?

If this is an automatic, do you drive with both feet? I see more and more people accelerating with their brake lights on, because their left foot is "resting" on the brake pedal, dragging thier brakes...

Yep, seems like a potential caliper issue with the uneven wear. Also, if they aren’t retracting properly, that would accelerate the wear.

It’s too bad you’ve already replaced parts, or you could have taken it to the dealer to investigate and explore warranty replacement.

 

Lol, only my manual cars. This truck is automatic so only my right foot gets to exercise.

 

This is exception and not norm. Before throwing random parts at it I would go to the dealer to see if you need warranty work. Most get 50-100k miles from their brakes

 

my brakes at 40k had less wear. i did change them out because my rotor was warped. thats not normal and something is wrong

 

I thought about that but both sides looked pretty much the same. The one pad that went metal to metal was on the left side. On the right side one of the pads was almost metal to metal. If it would be a defective caliper then the wear on one side would differ greatly from the other, unless o course both calipers are defective, IDK.

I am past the warranty (2019 MY), I also called the dealer and didn't get any good vibes from them. Didn't want to waste my time and money. Did it myself for under $300.

 

WOW - hard to believe! Replaced mine last spring at 140,000kms 6yrs but regularly service guide pins though. Shopped around for after market and OEM rotors were same price as AM but pads were a lot more, decided to go OEM for $100 difference. Rear shoes and drums still mint. Seems highly unusual.... ^autocross^ haha!

 

something else is wrong, find it before you have the same results over again.
A 2019 with only 22k miles and the results, lead me to believe you have a a stuck caliper. At the very least, pins should be wire wheeled and lubed properly once every year or two,, regardless of weather or not a vehicle needs pads and/or rotors.

 

Your post is a shitpost. I have 24K on my 2021. Pads look brand new. On my previous 2017, I put 74K on it before needing pads. What the fuck. Please, anyone reading this thread please disregard.

 

Calliper slides need cleaning and greasing by the looks of it.

Inspecting the brakes properly every year would have caught this.

Pads at the very least are not releasing properly.

I have a 2020 with 28k miles and around a 1/3rd of those were towing a 5klb trailer. My brakes still look great with approx 2/3 wear left.

 

One thing to check would be the wheel bearing. If it's the tiny bit loose it would cause the rotor to angle to one side either to the inside or outside due to a turn or the alignment. I have had both situations, piston stuck or loose wheel bearing. attention to either of those to be your answer to your problem.
