For your edit: the rivian is vastly more expensive to own than the Tacoma. Like by a lot. You’ve won that case, and I congratulate you on it. Not sure what else I can do here

I see that there is now a Rivian service center in Boise…so it is possible!

Have you considered a pre owned Rivian?

So are a corvette and a mclaren. One is vastly more expensive than the other

I did that math last year between a Rivian and Tacoma Pro and I came up with 17 years to break even. That was without the electrical work to the house as I was figuring I could barter with someone to get that installed.
    A Lightning will be similar.

Why are you so pro EV when you don’t even own one? It’s really weird.
Also on a Tacoma forum and don’t even own a Tacoma.

Okay, but the Tacoma and Rivian are similarly sized which I believe he said was his interest.

You have to also factor in the premium you paid for an EV over a comparable gasser. Could be $15-30k easy.

While it would certainly affect the Rivian's range, one or two 3.5s 0-60 runs a day will put a smile on your face that lasts a long time. Totally worth the upcharge.

Alright alright all fun aside. Still would like to see the cost break down over the course of let’s say 10 years to keep it simple. How close or far is it?

I’ll round the fuel costs up to $4000/year. Over the course of 10 years/200K miles, the Tacoma shouldn’t need much repair hopefully, only fluid service. My original purchased price of $40K, then $40K for fuel, say maybe a $1000/year for service, 5 sets of tires=$5000. Carry the 2…bleep…blaap…bloop. Roughly $95K to own and operate a Tacoma over the course of 10 years.

Check my math though…as I was fed tofu as a child by my hippy mother. (that one is true…)

People always forget the difference in the entry cost of vehicle purchase at the start. There is about a 11K difference between the cheapest EV and the cheapest ICE vehicle.

Maybe you saw this but this is the basic R1T, cheaper new than used. 270 mile range I think 60 MPGe Dunno what state you're in but they could offer incentives. BUt basically over 50% fuel savings to go the same mileage over any current V6 Tacoma.

Here you go: a rivian r1t with the large pack after tax rebates is ~$77k after destination charges. A TRD pro Tacoma is ~$51k after destination charges.

    A difference of $26k

    The rivian does mid-30s to low 40s kWh/100miles (we’ll
use 39 for fun) so over 250k miles, it would cost you (2500*39)*.24= $23,400 in electricity

the TRD pro in the real world gets maybe 19–20mpg, so at 19.5, it would cost 250000/19.5*4.50=$57,692 in fuel.

    So a difference of $34,200.

but we haven’t included oil changes, let’s call them $60 and do them every 7500 miles: $2000. Trans fluid drain and fills and diff maintenance every 30k adds another $800 or so ($100 each time * 8 times). Brakes at $500 per set done twice and only once on the rivian: $500. Spark plugs, radiators, belts, god forbid your timing cover leaks, etc. let’s go all in on maintenance at $7000 over the life.

Now the ownership cost comes back to pretty even, and that’s assuming that you ignore the fun of having a 500hp truck instead of an anemic minivan v6.

There ya go @OpeCity! Turd understands what I was after.

I didn’t even include the charger install. Wild guess of $2000 here. Service prices prices are nuts in our area. And that is if our panel doesn’t need upgrading. It was done 12 years ago by the previous owner, with my grandfather being a Union electrician…know enough about it, that it isn’t up to par.

I helped my neighbor install his charging outlet near his driveway. Under $300.
