Speaking of pros; @eon_blue you gave us horror stories about people just "expecting" shit during your freelance days

Any friends or relatives try pulling that shit on you?

Oh yeah, my father expected me to photograph his wedding a few years back. It was a really small ~20 person ceremony and all, but still. I wasn't thrilled about it lol. Especially with stuff like events/weddings, I'd rather be a guest at a friend or families special event than working it, that's no fun at all.

But yeah it happens all the time with friends and family, family especially

My sister wanted me to photograph her and her husband's engagement photos a year or so ago, I just flat out refused. Told her you'd be much happier with the results if you hire someone that actually enjoys shooting that kind of stuff because that is 100% not my forte. I did her headshots for her therapy business but outside of small stuff like that, I would rather not

    Fair enough..
My baseline is to always assume people are getting lazier, but I genuinely don't know because of how much the internet has exposed everyone to...well, everyone. That is to say maybe people have always outsourced their work whenever possible, and looking back it just *looked* like people were more independent because of a particular framing, or the lack of extraneous details that we have today about people's lives.

But then again... like still the average joe used to be much less urban and more self-sufficient before now. But then there was also stronger community where maybe people did more favors for each other... so idk.

But I do see convenience as cheaper today, even if wealth is sort of stagnated, if that makes any sense (wealth constant, QoL up). Sort of like how I can hop in a cheap car and drive it 5 miles a day just so I don't have to eat a meal from home, and barely exert any effort to get that done. I can just as easily say "well I don't have to worry about what happens if this car breaks down because there are plentiful cheap alternatives to get what I need - I don't need to ensure it's totally robust because my livelihood depends on it". Like the savings & convenience of having advanced tech means we don't have to think as much about how we manage our time & money and I feel it's easier for people now to justify "frivolous" spending, instead of digging deep and figuring out a way to get things done cheaper, or learn a new skill so they no longer have to rely on someone else. Our poorest live like the kings of a century ago, so the sort of *comfort baseline* has been raised and so I think subconsciously people feel that and react to it. "Why learn to survive if you'll always be taken care of?" sort of thinking. Actually I just watched a yT video breaking down how gen Z isn't learning how things work like past generations because everything has always "just worked" (if you think in terms of computers and entertainment especially), which ties in directly.

It's also hard to separate quantity from ratio, speaking in terms of population, when assigning what is normal or average. We have a ton more people which means higher exposure than ever to certain things on a quantity basis, which can skew mentally as to what is the norm.

    Oof damn

Yeah dude I don't even know how people even get the idea to ask, much less expect it; photography is one thing but certain events is a whole different category as well

Damn, I'll have to come back to this as I'm gonna watch a movie but have to say I do agree on several points.

Maybe just add that I don't believe people want to become lazier but that technology has simply enabled people to do so.

Take a child for instance; he or she needs stimulation, guidance, they need to be led. Without that, without challenge, you're already setting them up for failure. And growing up (that new generation), we've enabled them as a whole to become who/what they are.

Yep, I agree on that. Though I think many are so dependent/ignorant that they never realize they don't have to - or even shouldn't - just go with the flow, and that there are things you deliberately have to pull yourself out of for personal betterment. I think it's strongly related to the ability to focus outward and see the bigger picture, and the size of your part in it, then making a conscious decision to do what you can to not be a leech, or burden, or adder of chaos.

I feel myself as though I've always planted myself firmly on shore, but the longer I'm on this earth the more I feel the current of complacency pulling me in and it's both annoying and scary, but also comfortable and harder to resist.

When you’re 17 and can’t afford shops or services you have to learn how to do stuff yourself. Perk of being a broke teenager

Necessity is good motivation. That's how I started to learn too, couldn't afford shit and now I don't need to be at the mercy of one of the most predatory industries. Turned out to be a fun hobby that sparked me to learn to fabricate, weld, build engines, transmissions, build and tune EFI systems... Etc

It's a good way to start.
