I’m pretty sure a pickup has to be under $80K to qualify.

This thread is 600 pages long bud. There’s been plenty of diesel discussion.

Nobody in this thread, but there are plenty of Tacoma drivers who want a diesel. For the price of an EV you can get a diesel truck, for less. Does anyone really need an electric truck?

There’s been a whole lot of irrelevant, silly discussion. I agree

I don’t think anyone here has said that they want or that anyone should buy a rivian, either

Ok, what other production EV truck exists that you can cross shop with a Tacoma? Only other I can think of is the Lightning. Going to be right up there cost-wise with the Rivian though.

Commute is mostly flat. I fill when it hits E, usually takes 18 gallons. 18X23.7=426.6 so my fuzzy math of 420 was a smidge off, it is actually better!

I'm questioning the need for the existence of an electric truck.

None, and that’s another reason an EV pickup isn’t right for you

Freedom of choice, my dude. Some people want an 800hp truck that fits in the garage, looks unique, and can haul some stuff around when needed. Other people want a big diesel pickup that tows 27,000lbs. It takes all kinds, horses for courses, different strokes, etc

Also the Rivian is made for off roading. Ford is a full size work truck.

1000 per year for service, I've had 4 Tacoma's and have never spent anything close to that.

I want a Rivian… it is the cost, range and recharge time that kills it for me. That and no 6’ bed, but could make it work. Probably could make the range work if I got super anal retentive about how I travel, but I don’t like itineraries. As I always have extra cans of fuel with me so I can wander.

You have to compare a new Rivian to a new comparable truck. While the Rivian bed is small it does have a frunk. The Rivian interior dimensions are half way between a Tacoma and a Tundra. Given the standard equipment on the Rivian, the comparable Toyota models are the TRD Pros. Price of a '24 Tacoma TRD Pro or Tundra TRD Pro vs Rivian (even with a $2500 paint upgrade) is competitive.

Sounds like you don’t actually want a rivian. You want a hypothetical ev that doesn’t yet exist

Carry one of these instead of a bunch of fuel cans. Much safer.

That's why I said need and not want, I'm sure that not everyone driving a diesel pick up needs one. With the exception of 0-60 times gas and diesel trucks out perform electrics in all other categories. Sure if someone wants an electric truck that's fine.

Did it a bit high since I now only take it to the dealer, retired myself from doing my own service. Pure guesstimate and trying to appease OpeCity for the sake of comparison.

Have the throttle body, fuel system, power steering, and brake system service coming up. iirc that is an easy $600+ Some say you don’t need it, but I don’t want anything coming back to haunt me if there is a warranty issue.

My past Toyotas didn’t start nickel and diming for repairs until the 250K mark.

Okay cool, thanks for the help. Some people want an electric truck. Nobody needs a HD diesel truck, but some people want a lifestyle that includes it

For the price of that lifestyle truck I'd rather have the HD diesel. I don't really need an electric lifestyle truck or a HD diesel truck. That puts them in the same category for my use case scenario. The diesel HD holds it's value, can be upfitted with anything from a snow plow to a wheel lift, and anything in between.

I would not say nobody, there are plenty of farmers, ranchers, construction crews, heavy equipment operators and hot shot drivers out there that need a HD diesel truck in order to make a living. Not sure there is an EV equivalent to that yet. And yes, there are some whose lifestyle and choice of recreation require a HD diesel truck. (although I would argue that with a few exceptions, they don't need diesel, they can get it done with gas)
