Or if a Rivian will even make it to 200K miles. The battery may last that long but will the rest of the truck? I have personally never got a vehicle to that high of mileage before unloading it because it was becoming a money pit. Maybe my Tacoma will be the first.

 

Okay I think you should buy the diesel if you’d like to buy the diesel. You probably should not buy a rivian

 

My neighbors across the street have a horse farm and use HD Diesel Dually to pull those gigantic trailers. They could probably get by with something less, but they seem to need one for that type of work.

 

It’s weird how ranchers, farmers, construction crews, etc get through their days without American HD diesel pickups in every other country.

we make choices and desire the types of vehicles we have. “Need” is just a fabrication of those choices

and that’s completely fine and I encourage them to live their choices and buy that HD truck. But when someone questions the “need” for the rivian to exist, it’s not really asking the right question.

 

That’s why this thread has gone so long. It’s entertaining discussion vs the “how big of tires can I fit threads”

 

Same, I'll be open to an EV when it will provide the same service, dependability longevity and range as the vehicles I currently drive. Until then, I'll keep listening to the excuses why I don't need that capability etc. I actually like the technology, and am intrigued with where it goes. I am also intrigued as to how much land it rips up along the way. The western US is not gonna be as nice as it is now down the road, once those mines get started.

 

The Rivian is cool if you want an electric truck with nice interior and an abundance of tech features and performace. Other than the performance, I could do all the same things I would do in a Rivian with a 4cyl 4x4 SR utility package. The Toyota would probably cost significantly less from intial cost and overall cost to own.

 

You think there are fewer diesels in those countries...lol...there are more... they use different vehicles designed for their smaller roads, and shorter distances between locations etc. Lots of tractors on the road...tractors are super clean..lol. The farming and construction equipment used in other countries is designed for their specific use cases and roads etc.

 

Yeah I totally agree. You could probably do it in an even cheaper truck than the 4x4 SR Tacoma even

And indeed, we’ve all made decisions that left us where we are. None of it is needed, it’s desired.

 

That is not how I compare things though. Do it by how much money is laying on the table and what can I get with it. Like that with all my purchases. Give up some amenities to gain more capabilities or vice versa sort of thing. It is my money I can spend it and compare whatever however I want ya know?

So. I have $100K, how should I spend it? A Rivian? A Tacoma? A F250? each truck will do the exact same thing I need it do. Commute 3-5 days a week, run to the mountains every weekend hauling dirt or mountain bikes. Do 2-3 day weekend trips here and there, then 3-4 times a year I take a week long vacation to somewhere mountainous. Heading to Washington here in 4 weeks actually.

Each truck will do the same task at hand, but each has a different approach about doing it.

What gets me the best bang for the buck?

 

The best bang for the buck is a used truck with 150k on the clock and use the rest for maintenance

Yeah, kinda stands to reason the American HD trucks would mostly be used in America. Europe and the rest of the world have their own work trucks they use. They do tend to buy specific commercial trucks for their uses, where here in the US we tend to mix our work vehicles as our personal vehicles more. Because they are not sold there, the personal use trucks are usually the midsize Ranger/Hilux offerings. But having lived there for a number of years, if American Full Size Diesel trucks were available to purchase in Europe....you could not keep them on the lot.

 

Yup. I’m at 173K and just thinking about changing the Tcase, front diff, brake and radiator fluids. Never touched any of them. Most years I’ve done no maintenance but oil changes.

 

I’m a big fan of EVs, and but let’s face it, the Rivian only has like a 5 foot bed, which means it’s not even a real truck.

 

Finding a good used truck is close to impossible, it can be done but it won't be cheap and who gets rid of a perfectly good truck?

 

And just think of all the repairs you could make with the 20k you’d save.

Again, this is the bang-for-the-buck argument, not the “I want something nice” argument.

my point isn’t that you should want what you have, or have a lifestyle that necessitates it. I’m pushing back against the idea that nobody “needs” a rivian. No shit, nobody “needs” any of it. It’s a meaningless statement by batacoma
