The antenna on my 03 tacoma was broken off several years ago by a tree limb. Since then I have been replacing it with aftermarket antennas from my local aut parts store. The problem with these is they are plastic and only last a few months. I thought about installing a power antenna but didn't know if there was enough room for it or if would even be a good decision. Anyone have suggestions? Thanks!

went to their website... under FAQ's...

Q: How is the radio reception of these antennas when comparing to OEM one?
A: The radio reception will decrease since these antennas are shorter.

so why again are they great?

Looks mostly. Where I live, I have not lost any reception. I also have sat, so I mostly use that anyway.

i don't really notice my antenna at all (and i like it that way), so there's no way i'm adding an antenna i know performs worse than the oem.

O K. Then don't. Like I said, I don't really use my radio. I have Sat. and use that mostly or my Ipod. I like the look of a short antenna.

Autozone sells a 13 or 14" antenna (I think the brand is Raptor?) for around ten bucks. I think it's worth a try and see how the signal strength works for the owner.

Or for near OEM signal strength, but not the height, the OEM antenna can be fixed by removing top ball, cut a few inches off, reattach ball (needs a bit of file work, soldering & paint). I did this to my truck since I have a low garage door that my antenna was hitting on entry. I cut 2 inches off, which results in a signal optimized for around 98MHz on the FM dial.

Without an antenna, then you will more than likely get nothing but static. Having a shorter antenna is better than having none at all.

I have a 8 inch antenna installed, but really only listen to my iPod. But I still have the option of listing to the radio if needed.

In the end, it all comes down to how much you use it, and personal preference.

I installed a black Metra power antenna last year. I got ridiculed a little here about it but I like it since I usually listen to the Ipod and it stays out of sight until I need it. Bad part is I had to take it apart once because it got stuck in the up position.
