What Have You Done To Your 2nd Gen Tacoma Today?

Relocated my AWD t-case shifter and added a 3D printed cupholder this weekend. Working on a boot for the cupholder’s shifter now

My Capri was a Mercury, white with a sun roof. I was racing some chick down the hill from Donner Pass doing about 120mph. I think my tires were speed rated at 115mph?
Poor 4 banger was working so hard it snapped all the head bolts. "What's that rattling noise?" Stupid kid with 7 lives....

 

What did you weld that extension with?

why not put both in the console so they’re separate from and not hitting the shifter or your hand?

 

How this thing should have come from the factory! The AWD is pretty sweet in a truck other than the gas mileage

I tig welded a piece of a harbor freight 3/8” drive socket extension on it.

I didn’t want to deal with trying to make 3 shifters work together. Seemed easier to just relocate the rear one since the front two didn’t require any modifications

 

I have a couple of questions, actually I probably have a bunch of questions, but I can't remember all of them right now. Lol! Number one of course is will it pass smog in California? Can it be done on an early second gen? I own a 2008. Does the mileage get better as the truck gets used to the changes? Do I need to give it a tune up first? Ugh! So many questions!! I'm so sorry for blasting you with a bunch of questions! I've always been curious about doing something like this.

Edit: One more question... When you give it the beans is it satisfying...???

 

WOW!!!!!!

 

Both driver & pass side brake lights were out. Only my LED camper brake light would show when brakes were applied. I also found these two less-than-ideal connections that I fixed with heat shrink solder tubes.



I also replaced both tail light bulbs. I can’t tell if the bulbs were entirely to blame on the lack of brake light illumination here based on the wiring failures, but the $9.50 was well spent on fresh bulbs after examining these. Cheap insurance.

 

Finally, after driving 5,000 miles roundtrip from Dallas, Texas to Ridgefield, Washington, I am happy to announce that a set of Ray10 wheels purchased from Tacomawold's marketplace have a new home in my TACO!

Shoutout to @gobie18 for the listing – I had an amazing two-and-a-half-week adventure camping, hiking, and biking at national parks across the U.S.

 

When I give her the beams, totally satisfying. Feels and sounds great. As for a tune up before, totally unnecessary but won't hurt. Gas mileage has ready imprp ed to better than before the tune (was as good as 16mpg when driving a bit more conservative). Haven't had to get a smog yet, but from everything I've researched the tune does not create any problems.....time will tell. I'd think an early second gen is doable, but I'll tag my guy @805 Tacoma Tuning to provide more clarity on that. Looking back now I feel dumb fpr not doing it sooner, but then again had I don't it sooner I wouldn't have connected with Tom the tuner and possibly not KDMax. Now I couldn't be happier with the KDMax 10.0.

 

Was a blast working with you @powder1134. Hearing that you are enjoying your truck even more now is what it's all about and why we enjoy what we do so much.

To answer your question, thousands of customers across the KDMAX network continue to have warranty work and smog certification completed while tuned.

These services typically are interested in verifying the vehicles ECU ID. Any obvious overwrite of the ID which does not align with the correct ID would be a red flag.

KDMAX programming/tuning maintains the standard factory ECU ID and does not create any "tuned" profile visible to a technician who may be scanning the vehicle.

We even take customer service a step further by verifying if the vehicle needs a ECU ID update due to any released TSB's and update it at no additional cost to the customer prior to the tuning process.

Early 2nd gen, 2008, not a problem. We can support that. It's always a good idea to have a current tune up for the health of the vehicle in general but as long as the vehicle is in good operating condition the tune is applicable.

Im on the same boat as @jackn7 but I'll be upgrading with the cam gears from URD and the intake spacer as well. Would the tune work with those two upgrades as well as pass California smog? Figure it wouldn't be a problem for the latter since you explained it a few posts.

 

Smog will not be an issue with the tune however, the URD spacer will prevent it from passing smog to the best of my knowledge.

Just saw this. So far they are great, they do pick up a lot of gravel though. But a good mix of on/off road tread
