Hi there, me again same issue, Tacoma SR5 with V6 in 2020 and it has 16,000 miles. I have noticed something that is happening when the engine is warm, and I am doing stop and go driving. Between about 15 - 45 mph, and especially when the truck is changing gears, I am getting a pinging sound / spark knock upon acceleration. I run gas, 87 octane in this , and I've heard others say that they used 91 octane to deal with this issue. I've read something similar from others but still can't find a reason, I live in texas and this summer have been extremely hot dont know if it has anything to do with it but it's a data, going to the dealer without check engine light on in my opinion is not a good idea, they'll start proposing everything but nothing accure unless I find the unicorn of honest mechanic in dealerships. Already cleaned throttle body, MAF etc. Any help is more than welcome thanks in advance.

Oh there will be some mods all right
Mine does it too. Seems like 91 octane and a KD Max tune helped.....but did not eliminate it. Thinking I will go back down to 87 since it didn't completely fix it.

I've got a 2020 sr5 v6 also, and only use shell, or irving 87 fuel. All ours are e10 blended. I've got 23k and change. Trucks a rocket, no pinging, no nothing....touch the skinny pedal, and it instantly goes. I haven't done anything, but an oil change since toyotacare.
When I hear these bs complaints, it's hard to believe any of them.

It’s worth trying the high octane once to see if it solves the problem. Then at least you know for sure what the sound is.

I keep thinking, and posting it, that these gen3 v6 tacomas must be all tuned somewhat different, that some have told me theirs is as good as any truck they've owned, while others say there's are a pos...a buddy included, so its hard to know what to believe, yet go to a dealer, and they say all is normal.

Altitude, heat, fuel can impact knock sensitivity. Once this engine detects knock, it pulls a lot of timing. Once it pulls all that timing, it runs like a dog. I believe that's what's going on here. Mine runs so much better on 93 octane but it's not a cost I want to continue. A good tune can change the spark retard from ping. The engine does have a high compression ratio, so I can understand where the knock comes from.

I find it hard to believe you need 93 fuel to make these trucks run right. If in put that stuff in my fuel tank, my truck will run like dog poop after awhile. Use 87 e10, and it runs as good or better than my 01 tundra.

Just dropped it at the dealer but for sure they'll already said that there's not much they can do about it, it's and isn't an issue according to them

I don’t know that anyone needs 93 octane. But if you put a tank in and the knock goes away, it was spark knock. It’s not so much a fix as a diagnostic. I’m not there to hear it for myself.

don't know why my truck runs like crap on 87. guess could be loose spark plugs or just reduced performance due to timing retard. but there is a massive difference.

Zero difference with my 2.7 gen3 wether 89, 90 or 91 octane....I'm at sea level.
I only use Shell tho and I seem to get slightly better mileage on the 89 but I've never measured it.

There was a notable performance difference with a buddies 2019 trd vs my 2020 sr5. Same engine, automatic, tune, and final gear ratio. Dealer tried to convince him nothing was amiss. It drove him to a frontier.
As far as fuel grades, I tried a few tanks of 89. No difference of any sort I could claim. It was definitely more lazy with some gear hunting when on my 3rd tank of the shell premium 92 stuff. Noticed the inside end of my tailpipe tip all sooty black.....it's normally a light grayish/brown when using 87.

Meaning, they couldn't replicate it? Or they replicated it and said it was normal?

My 2021 V6 has to be good and warmed up, such as today with the A/C on.

I get that light spark knock is normal with a feedback ignition system, but the brief knock on tip-out is so loud it sounds like my hitch is rattling.
