04 Tacoma -piggyback S/C ECM problem

Hello, new member here, I just got this '04 Tacoma, 4x4, 3.4L manual trans, short bed with TRD supercharger.
very nice truck but it died on me the other day. I isolated the problem to the PIGGYBACK ECM, if I unplug it from the main ECM and connect the harness to the main ECM, the truck will run but will ping under acceleration. The piggyback ECM is a O.E Toyota TRD part, #00602-17620-271
and when I called Toyota dealers I've been told it is a good number but no longer offered for sale. My question is does anyone knows where I can get one, or get it repaired? I've searched on ebay without success and I have spoke to couple of "tuner" shops in my area(Phoenix AZ) without much luck.

Welcome to TW. The TRD 7th injector was the precusor to the URD 7th.

It looks like Toyota Parts Deal has it in stock. All I did was a google search for the toyota part number. Check it out.

FWIW, those type of parts generally don't fail that much. Any more details on what all is happening and how you were able to determine in was the 7th injector that was the root cause.

 

I would be incredibly surprised if they still had stock of those things, people in smog states even years back were desperate for used ones because they're CARB certified, but TRD discontinued them. Toyotapartsdeal just probably hasn't updated it to say discontinued

 

You may be right but I also know they are pretty good about saying so when an item is discontinued or unavailable. In those situations I've been unable to add item to the cart. For this particular part it is possible to add to the shopping cart so

OP, it might be worth contacting TPD directly to see if they can in fact get one of these.

 

It should still run without the piggyback working though, if it's just a 7th injector kit? I would just remove the system entirely, you don't need the 7th injector to drive the truck. Just don't race it around in high boost if you have pinging issues until you get another fuel support system installed

 

That's what I'm curious about too, seems odd that the piggyback itself would prevent the truck from running when all it's controlling is the 7th injector

 

If you can't buy a replacement TRD ECM, you'll need to find another means to control the timing and 7th injector fuel delivery, or you can go with a larger pulley to reduce the boost (and hopefully the ping).

If you are familiar with the truck and supercharger, you should consider a standalone ECU like the Haltech Elite and really see what the truck is capable of. A few of us have the Haltech, and the knowledge on the forum is tremendous.

Just the fact that once bypassing the TRD ECU, the truck is starting and running.
I'm not sure if it has the 7th injection set up, I was unfamiliar with it, Googled it and found that the additional injector mounts on the SC egr port, I have not seen anything like that on my SC??

 

Do you have the gray version of the supercharger (1st generation) or the black (2nd generation)?

The 7th injector kit should be compatible for both the 1st and 2nd generation superchargers, does your truck have EGR? Not many came with it, but those that did couldn't run the 7th injector.

If you have the 7th, there will be a fuel line over the supercharger tied into the back of it where the 7th injector plugs in

Would be odd to have the piggyback installed for it but not the injector itself, would make me wonder if the previous owner decided to remove it but left the piggyback on there.

 

Looks like I have the 7th injector. It's the black TRD unit. I wondered if anyone had any experience with ECU repaired, that would be the ideal solution I would think..
