I'm just a old shade tree mechanic and I'd be ashamed of this kind of work. How can someone have any pride or self respect and work like this. Maybe Toyota's main office should know what kind of shite poor mechanics they have representing their name.

Go back and have them redo the valve cover bolts and detail the engine bay. If they wont just get rid of the truck. Most dealerships are the same, it is very hard to come by a good honest mechanic who does good work.

There is a big reason as to WHY I do all my own work and don't let anybody else touch my vehicles.

I do work on peoples vehicles on the side and I go over all bolts twice to make sure they are tight, I would be ashamed to hand over vehicle which has finger loose valve cover bolts.

HOWEVER It had happen to me fortunately only on my own vehicle. When you do a big job, it is hard to keep track of all the bolts which has been loosened. Give them the benefit of the doubt and see if they own up to their mistakes.

Will call toyota USA tomorrow make a bitch out of myself and let toyota of Orl. call me in a few days cuz I want the name of the salesman that worked on my truck. I dont know if ill let them near it anymore. All the FI crap has to come off to get to the top bolts. Not going to mess with it myself. Went back last Mon. the belt was not tight it rattled when the ac was turned on.If Iwanted to spend one day a week at the dealer I would have got a ford. A lot less $$$$$ but the same BS. Keep you all posted. Jim

Belt not adjusted, bolts not tight. Basic common sense 101. Are all the dealers in Orlando as shitty as yours or did you just get lucky ?

I got pm from all over the USA. not good anywhere. Im going to ask 1 800 toyo if they want to read some of this shit. I think the dealer with the most p.o.s. reps. in each big city should get the call take down the toyo logo. The ones left will start to do better work. This is going to a call for the books in the AM. CRAP ASS DEALERS WILL COST TOYOTA AND THEY KNOW IT.

You would think Toyota would take an interest but they don't seem to do anything about inferior plating on bumpers, chirping blower motors etc. Their hay day may be over if they don't get back to the basics of reliability that they became known for. Originally they kept on working one their product to improve it rather then changing for the sake of changing it. Now they are in the news and on forums like TW for one problem after another. That being said, mine is good - lucky I guess.

My '11 Owner's Manual says "oil Consumption: Max. 1.1 qt/600 miles".

Any modern engine that uses a quart every 600, or even every 1000 miles, has something wrong with it.

And aside from the basic problem of excessive oil consumption, it seems to me that such excessive oil consumption will lead to other problems such as fouled plugs and misfires, and premature failure of the cat system. And both of those conditions can result in failed emissions testing and costly repairs.

I have an '06 350Z (bought new). For some as yet undetermined reason, the '06's with 6 spd manual trannies (mine is ) frequently have excessive oil consumption. Initially Nissan's response was similar "a quart every 1000 miles is not excessive". But after months of complaints and pressure from owners, they issued a TSB with a test procedure. The dealership would top off the the crankcase, then the owner would return after 1000-3750 miles and the dealership would check the dipstick. If the level dropped more than 8 mm (approx 1/2 qt), they replace the engine. So Nissan is admitting that even 1/2 qt every 3750 miles is "excessive" (FYI, the change interval is 7500.) But many owners found that the replacement engines were no better than the originals. Some owners on the 350Z forums are on their 4 th engine.

Mine uses a quart every 3000-3500 miles. So mine would fail the test, and qualify for replacement. But 1) I don't feel that a field engine installation would match factory quality and 2) like I said, the replacement might not be any better (or maybe even worse) than the original.

Its got 48K on it, and the 60 mo powertrain warranty expires at the end of June. While I really consider a quart every 3000 excessive on a modern (Japanes) engine, I don't plan to go for a replacement.

But if my new Tacoma used a quart every 1000 mi, I would be at the dealership bitchin' every day. Or I would trade it for another Nissan truck, like the last 5 I drove.

BTW, I just checked the Tacoma...1200 miles, and the oil level just covers the "full" dot on the dipstick.

Very well put. While I agree that the guidelines placed in the manual are helpful because they're generally put there by engineers (read: other parties certainly have a say as to what's in that manual), a dose of common sense is in order here.

Just looking at the expectations put forth make it ridiculous that something wasn't done sooner. By the time the 5,000 mile interval was reached, all that you would have left is a coating of oil on the inside of your oil pan. Not normal, end of story.

Talked to head man at toyota of Orl. today, hes not happy about my truck being a rush job.He looked at paper work on my truck and 3 people worked on it. Hes put a stop to that one man on job start to finish. The valve cover bolts got him. This will be done right in one day he will pay for loner and next 10 oil changes on him. Some times its best to go to the top.

Unfortunately, much of what's contained in contemporary Owner's Manuals is written by lawyers.

    Actually, that's not quite right...

The requirement to put limits on things is imposed by the lawyers, but the limit (like 600 miles per qt.) is established by engineers, influenced by accountants nipping at their heels.

Not trying to be argumentative, but I can't imagine any real engineer saying that 1.1 qts of oil consumption in 600 miles would be considered within the acceptable range. (and I'm an engineer)

Ok OP so they did a shitty job putting some of the external parts together which may have resulted in a bit of oil loss around valve covers, but does the more significant "oil drinking" problem from timing cover seem fixed?
