I suppose if one was flush with cash then installing a “future-proof” rooftop solar setup, with whole home power like what a Powerwall system offers, would make a lot of sense even if you weren’t to live there forever. It would undoubtably add value to the home, present “solar appeal” / “prepper appeal” to the niche crowds, and if you did end up staying for 15-ish years it would pay the upfront solar cost off.

Being able to power your home through an extended outage would pay itself off in short order, for some folks. Keeping the chest freezers humming, sump / well pumps running, hot water heaters heating and all the other things definitely has a “cost” to a lot of folks.

An off the grid homestead powered by solar with a whole home battery system makes sense by any measure of the rubric. Just takes loads of cash.

Rumored R2 for 2026 for $40-50k. Likely a lower powered consumer focused vehicle. Following the same launch path as Tesla.

So last night I was at a set of lights and these kids in a Tesla pulled up and took off like a friggin rocket. That got me thinking as I read some where that the new Kia EV6 is faster than a Lamborghini Hurrican 0-60. They want to get rid of the ICE vehicles and give a bunch of people who can't drive to begin with a bunch of racecars.

People already can’t handle a 300HP Maxima. Imagine the chaos with double that HP.

I was talking with someone recently that said the main reason he bought his Tesla was so that he could set autopilot and read on his commutes.

FSD isn’t there yet. It will disconnect if you do that because there is a camera that monitors the driver. Dude was probably hopeful he could someday do so, or he was pulling your leg

What? There are videos of people sleeping while their Teslas drive.

Those were very early videos. Current FSD doesn’t allow you to do so

Trying to predict the future is tricky, not worth the financial risk or sacrifice on my end. Think I have been through too much in life that know anything can change in an instant altering yours forever. I am 51, none of the men in my family live past 70…I don’t have the time to see the returns if any.

Here, sure we get power outages, only lasts for an hour or two. Humans have lived longer on this planet without electricity than with, sure most of us will be fine. We have become so dependent on it, people freak out when there is a disruption. Solar is no guarantee either they could be damaged in a storm too. Guess you could have backup generators and whatnot, just not that paranoid.

As for trying to sell to preppers, my stepfather is a realtor, he had a very nice listing that was fairly self contained on an old ranch, fantastic views, miles awhile from populated areas. Actually even tried to market it to preppers. It sat and sat and sat, one of them died in the process of waiting, the widow took down the listing. Believe it eventually sold, but took years.

    https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1717-N-Bear-Run-Saint-David-AZ-85630/81983409_zpid/

So the meaning of that story is preppers are usually broke nutters…

Saw the same thing, bunch of teenagers in a Tesla blew out around because I am doing my typical old man slow driving down the road at the speed limited, what they didn’t see that the oncoming traffic was making a left, darn near took that person out. Though I have done some incredibly stupid shit when I owned muscle cars….there is very good reason why I am not in much of hurry these days.
