Is there different gearing for auto 1st gen tacoma vs manual. if so what is the gearing and which is better for acceleration.

There are 4 gears in an automatic and 5 gears in a manual to cover the same range, so just think about why that might be. Outside of supercar fancy gearboxes, manuals are almost always better.

But come on man, you have a Tacoma, it's not a race truck.

you know what’s crazy. you have no idea what you are talking about and it shows lmao. 4 speed with over drive so basically a 5 speed. i was asking about the dif gear ratio. Never said it was a race truck but i see no harm in making it faster.

    1 - Low
    2 - 2nd
    3 - Drive
    4 - Overdrive

Yup. I don't know what I am talking about.

I think OP want to see a side by side comparison of transmission gear ratio between auto and manual.

I found it years ago but can't recall which site.

But to answer your orginal question OP, yes. The gear ratio are different.

There were a few different dif gearing options available across the board for these tacomas depending how they were originally spec’d out. There is a code on the door jam sticker that will tell you which ratio you have. 4.10:1 or 4.30:1 are fairly common on the 4x4s, but there were a few others. The higher numerically the ratio, the lower the gearing is. Lower gearing will have better acceleration but at the cost of comfortable highway cruising capabilities. I.e. a 4.30:1 will accelerate faster than a 3.73:1 but the 3.73 will cruise down the highway at a lower rpm.

If you read through that thread, there are all kinds of idiosyncrasies and nuances beyond just the door code- But 99% it's probably right if the diffs haven't been touched... After that, you gotta do some actual rotation counting.

True. I guess it’ll only work for unmolested trucks.

So which is it you are asking about? Is it the gearing in the trans or the gearing in the diff?

Actually, sometimes the auto can "feel" like 5 speed.

    1 - 1st
    2 - 2nd
    3 - 3rd
    4 - Overdrive
    5 - Converter lock-up

I was going to mention that, but it's not technically a "gear" and it wouldn't change the gear ratio. Not to mention WAY over OPs head.
