Get some beefy magnets and silicone them on the toilet drain tube. Might save a future set of keys.

Would be an extra $250 for the second one I think is what they said.

Not shifting blame. Hence "My dumb ass never got a backup key" in original post. But I stand by my use of the term swindler haha. Or stealership... take your pick. I think it's pretty well known that dealerships are overpriced when it comes to maintenance. I do everything myself if it can be done... I just don't have the computer thingy to program keys and immobilizers.

Well, I believe the nesxt step in finding the key is to get a replacement...

Meaning that if it did not go down the drain; then surely it will turn up then! :D

(Especially if you order an additional key!)

At least that is how things typically seem to go in my case! :annoyed:

Best of luck in the remaining search! :fingerscrossed:

Sorry to hear this OP. Just so you know, it happens though.

I gave one of my keys away at Trick Or Treat one year. Reached in to grab some candy and gave some random kid the keys to my truck... It's how I ended up with a Lexus Key card lol. I even had a Tile locator on my key ring and poof gone. Until one year later I got a ping at a hotel about a mile or so from my house. Then that was the last my keys ever were seen.

So stuff happens. I vote for kid flushing them.

You could check the plumbing traps... I'd start with the one leaving the house..

    Um. Yeah...

OEM smart fobs aren't cheap, and the dealer is gonna charge full retail.

Did you have / were you given a separate tailgate key? My automatic came with a tailgate key that also worked the doors to the cab, but obviously couldn't be used to start it.

My keys were rockin the airtag for like a year and a half!! Something happened I don't know where it went - it came out of the little silicone holder at some point. But yeah, wishin I had paid a little more attention to that.

If it came with one of those from the factory, it didn't make it to the dealer I bought from. All I got was the one H-key, which is an ignition key with the Fob buttons on the top part.

Keys are fairly heavy and don't "flow" too well.
A plumber with a drain camera might be cheaper than a new key. :notsure:

Betting you were very thorough knowing the situation and your kiddo's penchant for making things go whoosh, but just off my skull...some things you might have particularly checked but never hurts if not.

Couch cushions and pillows..as in, unzip them and look inside if applicable.

You mentioned the toilet BUT..look in the back of the toilet in the tank. No kidding, at my league a phone went missing at an event and was found there.

Guessing you went through the laundry already, check washer/dryer just in case you have used them in the meantime.

Any books/DVDs/etc on shelves, pull the stuff out just in case.

Maybe I'm being a fool, but between the league event and having had a father in law who would hide stuff in those places and then some that I mentioned made me a little good at digging.

My 88 Chevy Celebrity ignition key was worn. Needed it to start the car but after that I could remove it and leave the car running. Worked okay for a starving college kid when everyone was getting remote starters.

Chances are they took the Tacoma in when somebody made an impulsive purchase, and they (the dealer) didn't give a shit about the second key they made a sale.

Go back and ask them for the name of the original owner, if they decline to give you the name for "privacy" reasons ask them to contact the original owner and explain your situation.

You will be wise to avoid any sales douche, the sales manager douche and absolutely avoid the service manager moron. There's always an office manager or records dept, etc. with any luck the person there will be a Mom and will relate to a kid's mischef.

This is a solid idea. Might be a long shot with the time that has passed, but it might be a lucky hit that the previous owner has the other key in their junk drawer.
