What do you want brand engagement to do? You have a rust perforation warranty on the truck...and it isn't perforated so there is nothing they can do. If you are severely concerned about it, take a wire wheel and clean up the welds. Spray some rustoleum black paint on it and then coat it with the metal protector of your choice. In a weekends time, you will have a beautiful frame and will be protected from your "frame rusting out from under you"

that’s normal. The car wash is also only use recycle water to rinse the underside. They do nothing to break the bond between the road salts and the metal.

The fix for this is to remove the rust, wire wheels work well. The bare area will need to be treated and painted. Then a corrosion barrier like wool wax or fluid film to protect the surface. You use wax on the surface of your paint to protect. It only makes sense to put wax on the surface of the frame to protect it.

Extensive rust? That looks pretty darn clean to me! If one wants to keep a frame looking 100% new they better never drive it...

No way. I’ve never owned any other vehicle that I had to worry about rust and never did anything to them other than washing them occasionally. Now I own a Tacoma and a 4Runner and both have rusty frames. Also the biggest issues are the areas you can’t easily treat or see. It’s the areas where the frame is sandwiched together and where it is boxed in near the front.

It's not hard. Take care of yourself and your property instead of depending others to do it. If that means fluid film then so be it.

FYI, Toyota wouldn’t have this extensive campaign to spray their goop on the frame and then eventually replace them if it wasn’t THEIR problem.

that's my impression here too, namely they don't know how to too. Not enough rust in Japan I guess. The frames come from the Japan factory. This particular one was shipped some time in 2020 - well maybe that has something to do with that. anyway, while some people here say "it's nothing - don't worry," heck, this is not normal. I have never seen a 2 1/2 year old truck with that kind of a rust on the frame. We will see. before I will do anything to it, I will end up taking it my closest local Toyo dealer - service center after Corp Brand Engagement had a chance to refer me there. You know, I hate to pay the dealership just so they can tell me the repair is not covered under warranty and I could use the $85 bucks, or should have used that $85 for my rust inhibiting solvents instead.

Yes I get it, of course, I am firm believer of self-reliance - and will act upon it. But I am also a firm believer in STANDING UP FOR WHAT'S RIGHT AND AGAINST WHAT'S WRONG, and give Toyota the opportunity to do that for which I paid for. I keep hearing / reading here "take care of yourself", or "take responsibility"... of course, we do that, I am not asking for encouragement and reprimand, I am asking for advice. This is really not the same thing here what our younger generations do nowadays, namely 'nothing but expecting entitlement'. They act entitled from nothing, just from a birthright, they are born, alive, and expect being handed a car, room and board, and a bunch of candy and don't even fix their bed for it. I am talking about I paid good money for my truck and it comes with warranty and that contract entitles me. Thanks for your advice to take care of myself.

I think it’s fair. You should be aware that maintenance starts at home. a responsible owner will do the stuff on their own or pay for it to be done, a negligent owner will avoid doing anything at all.

If a person buys a Tacoma and somehow doesn’t know their more sordid history of rust issues compared to other trucks on the market, then they didn’t do their due diligence in researching.
The frame isn’t beyond keeping in good health, I’m glad op posted. it will let him know solutions to it before the problems are too big.

Dealer with laugh at you and refer you to the local Krown rustproofing service.

You sound like an entitled baby. Why are you wasting your time and energy on something that A) you knew already about...Tacos prone to frame rust and B) There is a solution for....undercoating.

Why are you stil ranting on about god knows what? Nobody owes you anything, Toyota doesn't owe you anything and the world doesn't owe you anything.

Can be lock this retarded thread?

I read about the "TACOMA RUST" years, Toyota's repair events, replacements, and compensations (buy-backs). But I thought they must have learned from that and therefore there is nothing to worry about. The Toyota warranty covers rust for 6 years regardless of miles. We just have to make sure it's done, and done right. I am not that worried, but want to make sure I will have my TACO for 17 more years, plus. Good luck and congrats to your new Tacoma.

I'd wire wheel the rust away best as possible , hit it some rustoleum rust converter, then cover it with a good black chassis paint. After all that, time for a rust inhibitor of choice.

When I bought my gen 3, I asked the dealer if toyota has gotten their past rust issues resolved. The sales manager just came out, and said....toyota has done their share, but it's still up to you to take care of the truck when it comes to long term rust.

thank you for defending the "principle matter" here. I am going like "come on guys, why the heck do they attack me with 'take care yourself... bla bla bla'? Fair is not the issue here. Like you said, what are the options, ideas, any suggestions, and then move on, get something done. I am working on it. And Toyota Corp is hearing the brunt - sent an email with pictures already, and that before I head to the always-miserable-dealership service departments, you know, all of them are just miserable cheap bastards who can't or won't answer any questions unless you pay them $85 bucks. "Let's take a look at that, $85 bucks please". The last time I went was with break problems and an AC leak. I had to fix it myself and did, because I refuse to pay $85 bucks just to find out if it is covered under warranty. They decline it anyway, but not without my fight.

Total true, of course. Still, it's supposedly under warranty. And that is my number 1 way forward, and if not that, I want to know from Toyota what to do, and in the meantime, I am turning to my awesome community, and there are awesome suggestions already flying my way. I just need to find a way to get the car up on lift somewhere - you know, the old 'back' on the hard floor.

The tacoma frames do not come from Japan. They're made here in the u.s. by dana out of recycled steel, and whatever else thrown in.

    *laughs in rust belt*

But in all seriousness, it appears to be surface rust. Yes it is somewhat normal. You can knock it down with a wire brush and come in behind with some rust reformer spray paint. Then consider some undercoating. I recommend lanolin based such as Fluid Film or Woolwax. Avoid any sort of rubberized undercoating though.

It’s a cost saving measure. They could coat these frames better if they wanted to. Notice no one’s body panels are rusting. When you bring your truck in Toyota will add some plastic plugs to your frame and fill it with some goop and extend your frame warranty out to 12 years. Then have them inspect it every few years. I suspect that what they are spraying in the frame is just a band aid to get the frame beyond the 12 year mark and them off the hook.

I learned long ago not to rely on toyota for their rust issues. They must be so bad, the vehicle becomes unsafe to operate on our roads. I've dealt with surface rust issues, and how to prevent them getting worse....what I mentioned above has worked very well
