I never caulk baseboard bottoms. If you're caulking bottoms because the floor is uneven and shows waves or gaps, that's where shoe moulding or quarter round comes in.
As for the top part, best way to avoid it is not using tape. A drywall taping knife is great. Get a long one, use it as a paint shield. They're comfortable to use and you'll get your clean line with no fuss if you don't rush. (and remember to wipe off the paint after each stroke, helps keep trim and wall clean as you move down the line.)

If you have to use tape I always use Frog Tape. Has a coating on it to help the with paint adhering and also helps the peeling process. But you also have textured walls, which tape doesn't like. (I have them too at my place, different texture but still, not smooth)
Oh, and knee pads really help if you don't have them, even a cheap set is great.
Last time I painted trim in my commercial location I sat on my skateboard and just wheeled my ass along the floor haha.

That's on a south approach into Crescent City, CA following the coast line. The game does a fantastic job of creating some incredible visuals.

That reminds me, @Kwikvette have you found your house yet?

as a fellow Husky owner you should know, huskies and tennis balls don't mix. At least they don't with Dex, he destroys them and eats the pieces. Last time it almost resulted in a trip to the emergency vet until he finally threw it up. It was one of those orange dog toy tennis balls too that are supposed to be stronger

maybe I can stuff some of those Kong toys in the springs

That's actually how the Kong was invented, a guy saw how much his dog enjoyed chewing on a bumpstop from his VW

I found some solid rubber balls made by Snag that seem to be chew proof if you're looking for something of the sort

Kong toys will work, they are modeled after VW van bump stops IIRC lol

Are the original SR5 stepsides worth anything, or should I throw them out?

I couldn't even give the Westin ones away that came on my 4runner, I doubt they're worth much if anything.
