I haven't even started installing my new cylinder head yet.....and I already have a "Where does this go?" question. Uh oh. I thought it was probably safe to start a thread....as I'm sure I'll have others.

I accidentally yanked on this hose (connected to what I assume is a purge / evap canister).....and I can't for the life of me figure out where the other end goes. Video below, thanks for any help.

I am at work right now so I cannot go outside to look at my truck.

However, I believe that line heads toward the radiator. There is a vacuum line which connects the pre-throttle body air intake hose with the EVAP system. It consists of a vacuum line off the air intake hose which inserts into a plastic line atop the radiator which terminates into another vacuum line feeding into the EVAP system. That, I believe, is where this mystery vacuum line goes.

I could be wrong, and I apologize if I am.

I just checked photos on my phone. I was incorrect.

I will check my truck when I get some time to step away.

I'm almost certain it's somewhere down low. I have a ton of pictures when I took apart the engine, but that was a hose I had no need to remove, and I don't have any pics of it close up. As I was cleaning / prepping everything for this weekend, I had my hand down low scrubbing and cleaning.....and viola, it was loose. From the photos I have.....it looks like it drops down low in the direction of the firewall. I just can't seem to find a barb that it goes on. There is a hole with a little "plate" in the frame rail that it fits perfectly in. No chance it just vents to the frame rail, is there??

    Thanks again for any help.

    Hey, bud.

I couldn't get my flashlight to shine far enough down the engine bay to see where that line goes; however, your intuition is correct about the line going deep into the engine bay.

Concerning lines going into the frame, there is indeed a line which goes into the frame; however, I am not totally certain what line that is. I just remembering seeing that when replacing my starter cable.

Thanks - It's definitely the "breather vent" in that pic - and I'm thinking it just vents into the frame rail. That would also explain why it was so easily jarred loose as I was cleaning. No clamp or anything, so that makes sense. Thanks for the replies....

So far, everything has gone back together nicely.

Cool! For what it's worth, I am confident we have this right. And I am glad we clarified it. I was wondering where that mysterious line going into the frame was coming from! So odd!

The breather vent goes into the frame rail to try and shield it from taking in water or dirt. That's the evap canisters vent path to fresh air when the vent valve is open

I wonder if it would be wise to use a breather filter instead? I have a 5/16" K&N breather filter.

There's already a cheapie filter somewhere in line before the vent valve. Usually looks like a little plastic box

Yeah is the main canister vent.....

there is a second 'pressure blow off' line of the vps valve...

both those join and then down into the lower to dump...

You'd only have to filter incoming air....the other two anything to prevent water from going back up....

or god forbid.....coughing out gas if you overfill the gas tank...

without that vps valve....there may be suction on those lines under some conditions....

    dont know enough....

    charcoal.jpg

If you notice on mine that forward one just dumps to ground....
and the other vps one goes to a valve on the firewall...

Your photo perfectly illustrates what I envisioned. Thank you! Glad to see someone else has done this before.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
Some of the older years purged the charcoal canister direct into the air. The hose into the frame was where the hose went.

I am not sure just when they changed to venting into the engine via the air intake.

Thanks so much, that's all really helpful. I'm confident, especially because it came loose so easily and didn't have a clamp, or indications of being stretched over a barb.....it just vents / ends in the frame rail. So far, nothing else has stumped me. Exhaust manifold, egr, and front exhaust went back on last night, so I'm making progress. I'm sure there will be something else I can't figure out....

Been there and done it too. Hope you got an '02 pipe exhaust manifold instead of the cast. I swear mine has more low end pep with it. Cleaned the throttle body as well so she's taking it in as good as it's coming out. You won't regret the efforts.
