In over 200k miles on 3 Yamahas the only oil leaks I've ever had was one cam cover gasket that I failed to properly install following a valve check and 2 blown for seals at 50+ k miles on them. My Buell has been another story.....

My 1985 FJ1100 was still one of the best bikes I've ever owned and I still kick myself regularly for having sold it. Both of my FJR1300s have been similarly bullet proof and reliable as a hammer. Like I said one leaking cam cover gasket of my own doing and each suffered fork seal leakage at a bit over 50k miles. My 2007 had 127k on it when we got hit head on in 2019 and it met a very untimely demise. My 2014 has 61k on it now and nothing beyond routine maintenance.

My 1995 Buell, in my avatar, I've owned since new and while I really do love the bike it's had more that it's share of issues. Had the 2 bolts that hold the front cylinder head to the frame both snap for no apparent reason while still under warranty. Frame itself cracked right at a weld to the neck and bike had to be reframed. It was out of warranty at that point but thanks to Erik Buell he intervened on my behalf and I was given a new frame and most of the labor free of charge. Twice had to replace the crankshaft oil seal to the primary case. Oil tank had a weld crack leading to a very difficult to trace oil leak that would only happen after it got hot but spewed oil all over the rear tire. Some electrical demons that finally lead to the entire front headlight wiring harness being reworked with all new connectors. This is just the stuff I remember at the moment. It helps that I don't ride it much anymore probably. When it is ridden though it still puts a big smile on my face.

Yamaha has some great bikes. I've only owned two but no major issues with either.

The bike that really grabbed my attention is when the FZ-09 came out. A relatively cheap naked sport with an awesome inline triple engine, so cool. The T7 is the latest model that everyone is crazy for. I also like that they're still making the YFZ450R, all the other manufacturers gave up on 450 sport quads.

I was pretty set on getting an MT but once I saw used SDR's weren't much more I decided to go with that instead. I'm sure I would have been just as happy with the Yamaha, but liked that the KTM came stock with better suspension and components.

DUDE.... thats a STEAL for a 2nd gen ES model. paid 9k with half the mods, 2 smaller givi cases and 21k miles on the clock for my 2015 ES. Damn shoulda waited a year but ya know what.... WELL worth it, so much fun riding the last year on my tenere.

Maintenance isnt any more than any other fully fairing bike IMO. 26k mile valve check intervals makes things nice. When I got mine I went through the ENTIRE bike, im talking inspecting every pivot point, lubing everything etc etc. Full swing arm, drive shaft removal, front forks off to lube and tighten steering stem, coolant, brake fluid etc. This was at 21k miles.

TBH the ONLY things that really NEEDED to be done were simply tightening the steering stem bearing preload (dont even have to take the forks off for this just top triple and bars) and a full bleed of the abs and clutch lines. Valves were perfectly in spec, spark plugs looked good (but got changed anyways - there are 4, 2 per cylinder), coolant looked good but its easy to change while you are there with the tank off.

At this point other than probably doing fork oil / seals / slider bushings soonish cus im coming up on 25k miles, all she will ever need for the next 25k miles in oil changes (using cheap 19$ Rotella t4 as thats what seems to work best in it) and 8oz of gear oil every 2nd or 3rd oil change.

Its been a bike I can let sit for a week or two and just hop on it knowing I literally wont have to stop till i get to the other side of the country. Shaft drive just makes life so worry free.

A knockoff madstad windshield bracket from aliexpress for 52 bucks and 20$ "winglets" from aliexpress fixed dang near most of the wind buffeting and thats using the stock windscreen.

I will probably go a different route. It’s 500 miles away from me and not street legal. It’s also going to cost a couple grand to get a supermoto setup for it. I am noticing a lot of people are starting to list their barely ridden crf450rl’s. Appears that they are turds from the factory but come alive after you uncork them.

I'm super tempted because of the deal that it is, but I'm also having trouble justifying it when I haven't put down the miles I wanted to on the current bike.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
They are sweet bikes. The 3 cyl revs up high and feels snappy. The styling has always been spot on. I had a 1050 Speed Triple. Was a fun bike and I had buddies with Tigers. I was riding a big ass GSA triple black, before they changed the design. The tiger certainly had its draw backs off-road with the front end bottoming out.
But for a sport touring bike/ADV it was nice. Carves the roads very well.

You are on the 500X yeah? The ability to cruise at 80mph without even trying allows one to eat up miles and makes you want to ride haha. That stated, super tenere deals will be out there, it was never a popular bike so there will be low mile ones for cheap for the forseeable future.

Looks like they are answering the Pan America's lowing suspension system. As a short guy, that is a feature I'm totally hoping will catch on.

That's true, but to already have the bars, barkbusters, and luggage racks at such a price.... I'm tempted. Then again, I am seeing some dealerships down in AZ are knocking a couple grand off the price of new ones. I have terrible luck buying used vehicles. I always get the lemon.
