Haha well my 2007 Colorado dual cab 4 cylinder I bought used was slower. If I punched the gas my engine would roar but nothing much happened. I told passengers the pedal was just a volume control. I’ve also previously owned three other trucks, two full sized. But my Tacoma with the renowned 2TR-FE engine is my favorite. I just have fun in these threads and hope the rest of you do as well.

I rented a V6 and 4 cyl before buying my 2022 and decided to get the 4 cyl. The 4 cyl doesn't suffer from the retarded ignition timing feeling of the V6 and it's tranny does not gear hunt as much.

Because the 4 cyl doesn't have retarded ignition timing, it performs like an eager beaver on level highways; i.e. you'll find your speed creeping up to 75 - 80 MPH with just a slight press on the accelerator pedal. I really like that effortless highway cruiser feeling and the 23-24 MPG you get.

Any hill, however, will slow the 4 cyl down so the tranny will downshift to 5th and you'll need to press the gas pedal considerably to try and maintain a ~70 MPH speed. On a 6% grade you'll need 4th gear to maintain highway speeds.

Servicing the 4 cyl is a breeze compared to the crowded and complicated engine bay of the V6.

If you’ve driven much of anything produced in the 80s, you’ll be fine.

Let's be honest. 4 banger, 6 banger, they both make real tasty parts.

    Check build thread!
Correct, also they do not offer 2wd Tacomas here any longer.

I have driven both the v6 and i4 3rd gens. They’re both slow trucks. I felt alittle more pep in the v6 being it’s got 100 extra horses. But I still went with the i4.last cast block engine Toyota makes and if you’re using it as a daily you’ll be fine. The ECT button does give it a little extra something but I do love the little motor.

I would proudly have the i4 if it was available with a manual transmission.

This was always my dream config but got a new SR couldn’t afford higher trim just for the manual

Plus 1! When I popped the hood at the dealer, I thought 'Hey! Look at that! You can actually reach stuff without taking the engine half apart!'
Plus I love having the spin-on oil filter and not having to mess with 50's era cartridge filters..

Bumping this thread as I'm thinking about trading my pro M/T for a 4 banger  A part of me wants to snag the last of arguably the most reliable motor, plus I find I'm getting lazy in wanting to shift gears. I've got a Tundra for big boy stuff.

If you have a Tundra then sell the Tacoma and get something fun to drive for when you don’t need a truck.

I've been through that already. Mustangs, challengers, Jeeps, and now I really don't know what to get. I thought about a Honda Civic Si, GR86 but I've found I don't like sitting low in car. I kinda just want a good ol' reliable beater truck.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Funny you bring this up. Just today I was going up a steep hill and as usual it slows right down and I have to down shift and crawl over the hill. I was scared. I was so frightened you couldn’t have hammered a finishing nail into my ass but we made it and that never gets old.

You’re just going to lose money on the deal and end up with a less fun truck to drive. There’s no reason to believe the I4 is going to be more dependable than your Pro.

Sold my 9 year old TRD OFF-ROAD 124k on this forum. Before buying that i always drove the same as demos. Love the truck.
In January after selling the above truck i bought what we always called “the old man’s truck”. I found the 4 cly just fine for around town and between Texas and Florida on i-10. It drove 75/80 no problem.
My wife drives a 4Runner and feels the truck is underpowered. I really don’t.
BUT i did miss having 4x4 ever if i don’t use it. I missed all the fun stuff the +$$ Tacos offered. I was in Colorado last week and thinking my 9 month old 4cly Tacoma would not do well here if i should bring it.
I know i am not interested in the 2024 and with only one allocation remaining could not get another TRD with sunroof etc.
Ordered today a LIMITED 4wd that i will trade the 4cly on when it arrives approximately the 6th.
I have no real problem with the 4cly but wanted back to a real 6 before they are gone.

They had a 4 Banger with MT in 2016 and 2017 if you are looking for that combo.

Seriously?! The 2.7 is hands down more reliable than the 3.5. It’s bulletproof man.
