For plinking and HD I'd highly recommend something in 9mm. Since he doesn't want to carry I'd recommend avoiding the micro compacts that are all the rage these days (glock 43, sig p365, springfield hellcat, etc) and getting something alittle larger like a compact or full size. It'll be much easier and more pleasant for them to learn to shoot with.

Going to a range and trying a few is really the best way to choose if that's an option in your area. If not a close second is going to a shop and handling a variety of pistols to see what fits their hands best.

If I have to just give a blind first pistol recommendation it'd be a glock 19 (and by no means am I a glock fanboy). It's the #1 selling handgun in the country year after year for a good reason. It's easy to shoot, large enough that it's comfortable, small enough it's not huge (I carried one for years until I got my p365), has a good ammo capacity, the quality is high, and the price is very reasonable.

But finding what fits your hands is really the best approach. I also recommended a Glock 19 to my mom for her first pistol but she went and tried abunch and found that the HK VP9 fit her hands much better and now she loves shooting that thing.

 

I just found out West Coast Armory North has a handguns class for $115 and has 12 different handguns to use.

My bias wants him to get a 1911 because I think they are gorgeous and I want to shoot one. hahaa

What's people's go to suppressor for a 556 sbr platform? I can no longer buy the new gun I want, so I'm using my gun fund for one.

 

What sort of budget? Theres good cans at pretty much every price point these days. OOS, Deadair, Surefire, Griffin Armament ect.

My go to is still my AEM5 for 223 stuff. But i also run a discontinued TBAC 223A and my 762-SDN.....yeah all my suppressors are old by whats out there now lol

The NFA subreddit has a ton of good information and reviews. Hard to give a suggestion without more info because there are so many good options. It really depends on your priorities: price, size, sound suppression level, durability, weight, the need to tune rifle to cycle well, etc. Every can has its pros and cons.

Bang for your buck yankee hill machine is a great option, high end military proven designs surefire is the ticket, innovative new tech would be the huxwrx flow. Many many other choices too.

I will say avoid the Dead Sierra 5. They are having some serious QC issues right now where everyone’s baffles are disintegrating after a few hundred rounds.

 

I guess main priorities are suppression and price. Being an sbr it's loud as shit, and it's going to be my home defense weapon. I don't shoot too often, but obviously I'd like something to last. I'll take a look into the subreddit.

Over the weekend I've been geeking out on 5.56 suppressors because the idea of a dedicated can on my AR is growing on me (it'd be really nice to be able to shoot with just muffs instead of plugs and muffs).

You should check out the Otter Creek Labs Polonium and Polonium K. As a $500 suppressor that gives the big boys a run for their money it looks like one hell of a bang for your buck.

 

any recommendations on reflex sights on a g45 mos? really like the aimpoint p2 acro for enclosed but pricey and out of stock, also trijicon rcr is coming out in the near future but pricey. looked at holosun eps carry, but my buddies failed on him during a recent range trip.. or should i just go with a tried and true trijcon rmr? i looked at the DPP but it has a high deck.

Went to a Discovery Daddies Training Day-Range Day this weekend. Not much in terms of pictures, but man was it dusty. (Forgot how much blast my comp generates from the sides while I was proned out. Instant brown-out lol)

follow up. BCM refunded the cost of a BCG. I was able to find a replacement locally. Academy and other stores still sell these parts. Although, I have a friend that ordered an AR barrel online and the order went through but UPS cancelled it.
