Question: is there a benefit to just welding the bottom to the frame versus having him install a new plate on the bottom and welding them all together? Im thinking he may not have the heavy duty plate that 4x provided

 

Using a plate just means a larger contact to the frame tying it all in.

As for "heavy duty plate" it's just 3/16" mild steel.

Anyone doing fab work should have plenty of extra and scrap laying around -

 

Wow, that's awful. I've been doing mine. It does suck and 7hrs sounds about right if you do it right... But that ain't right. You're supposed to weld the plates on first, they should be fully welded all the way around, then weld the tubes on

Yeah sliders are upside down (maybe left slider got put on right side of vehicle). Grind off the welds, reposition slider, redo.

You can chop off / grind steel and re-weld multiple times without "messing up" the frame.

 

There is no need for a good fabricator /welder to remove everything it just needs good welds.

I say give it a try look at things how it then looks decide the next step.

 

7 hours on a weld it yourself kit or making the sliders and welding them on I could understand .

This job was beyond the skill of who did the work at this time.

I venture the first slider job they every did.

 

I could post mine, but once I finish I'll probably have 6-8 hours on it? Gotta remember there's alignment and multiple stages of painting involved too. Good learning for me on different angles of attack.

 

I see now I never include painting time that type of work is up to the person I am doing the work for.

Most time the sliders show up assembled I just install them .

that was why 7 hours seemed such a very long time. Very first time I could see taking longer .

I know going in what needs prepped The scab plates are pre made Prep work scab plates welded sliders clamped in place both sides welded.Any fitting problems are easily corrected .

Consumables and materials and Pizza I am good! Because most time it is well known people that can return a favor.

 

And here I was just about to tackle this same project myself. Just got a set of 4X innovations sliders in the mail last week.
If a guy taking money for the job could mess it up that badly, I probably shouldn’t try myself

 

It ain't hard, DIY it!

 

If you are even just a little confident in your ability to weld, then do it yourself. You can always take your time and go slow. Someone being paid is always going to try to do it in or under the time they quoted.

 

Thanks, I made my flatbed so I’ve got a bunch of hours welding in odd positions on that. All stick welding though. I have tig but I don’t have any time on it. I wonder what this guy used?
I’d really be curious to hear what got the guy so hung up for 7 hours.

I’ll definitely be doing a little more vertical practice before I jump in this one!
