As title states..mine was popping forever and it never bothered me, so I ignored it until yesterday when it actually broke both tabs of the actual door sheet metal.

I popped of the door panel, pulled out the broken assembly, removed the bolt attached to the body, used the bolt through a piece of 6” or so strapping and shot a couple of screws to the door under the door panel basically to keep the door from over traveling open. Losing the open hold is not a big deal for me.

All that said, anyone have a solution that would replace the assembly without requiring too much effort? Definitely can’t just put a new oem style assembly back since the mounting tabs are connected to the assembly. Not really wanting to replace the whole door or do much welding at this time. Maybe during the fall when the weather breaks. It’s like an oven here in Alabama right now.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

The strap is attached right under the door panel with a couple of sheet metal screws.

The metal pieces still attached to the assembly are from the actual door.

Holy crap Batman! Yup, that's ugly - but not beyond fixing. It will require some fabrication though. I'd suggest that you're going to have to fab up a new piece for the door that both fits the original Door Check mechanism (that's what it's called) and extends beyond the broken areas. You could bolt / rivet this piece in, or you could weld it. Time to pull out some cardboard and scissors to mock it up!
