Two weeks ago, I was pulled over at about 1am while driving home from dropping off my girlfriend after seeing the new Indiana Jones movie. The cop said I swerving and speeding, but I ultimately got let off with a verbal warning when it became apparent that I was not drunk; I had almost no recollection of the events leading up to the traffic stop until it came to me just now...

The cop was in an unmarked green Dodge Charger, and I thought he was just some prick tailgating me, so I sped up to put some distance between us; I had no way of knowing this was a goddamn police car and I take no responsibility for attempting to put some distance between me and what I thought was a tailgater. The use of unmarked police cars for routine patrol, especially at night, should be banned at the national level!

One of the mechanics working for Pete is a Toyota tech, and he discovered that there is a service bulletin for some sort of actuator or solenoid that controls fan speed. This has been shorting out both the HVAC control and the blower motor. Thompson Toyota wants over $1,000 for what you see in the picture below; I just bought one from a totaled truck for less than $150. The other part is gonna cost like $357, but this is the part that has a service bulletin, so I'm just going to eat it.

Were you having HVAC issues in your truck?

    Good lord…….
What are they trying to sell you?
    There is no picture…….?

    This isn’t anything new.
    It’s the resistor and pigtail.
You can also use the 2016+ resistor and an “update”.

And sometimes the blower connection melts too.
Amazon is your go to there.

A/C still works fine, but the wires were getting hot and the control panel was sometimes shutting off...

The $357.08 is for both parts and labor to install the resistor and pigtail, while the $1,020.71 is just for this thing...

The part you are showing is the control panel.
It does not contain the resistor. While rare, the control panel can go bad and sometime have a burnt connection. But again, it’s usually the resistor or blower connection.

    What problem are you experiencing?
I’d hate to see you buy/replace the wrong part.
Can you tell us what part Pete is replacing?

It’s rare that the control panel is bad.

The back of the control panel where the wires connect is blackened and burned. The resistor is causing wires into both the control panel and the blower motor to short out and get very hot.

Ok. I was making sure the control panel was indeed burnt.
I don’t know Pete. But some guys don’t know how to diagnose the speed control system.
And they just replace all the parts.

    If it’s burnt, replace it.
Sounds like Pete has you taken care of.

Pete's wife just had a baby yesterday and he is on paternity leave for the foreseeable future; Joe, one of Pete's employees, is a Toyota tech. He connected a meter to all of the important areas and tested the voltage with the fan.

No, it had anchors but they ripped out and cannot be replaced without replacing the entire carpet; I plan on replacing the carpet eventually, but just the carpet alone is over $700...

I would think there would be some less pricey carpet on the market, Tacoma's in general have a pretty good selection of aftermarket available.
