Not even all that far $250.00 dollars in 2 days.

Honda Odyssey vs Toyota Tacoma? Pt. 1
At first glance, it is a laughable comparison right? Like comparing a rock and peanut butter!
But, consider this:
Both are mass produced
Both have similar wheelbase
Both are designed for hauling both people and stuff
Both have similar engines and horsepower!

So it's not like I am comparing a hand built Singer Porsche to a Kia Telluride!

I bet you think, yeah yeah, we all know the difference between the two. They are
Frame vs unibody
Off road vs on road
Pickup vs van

And you would be right. However, the above only scratch the surface of the differences between these vehicles, and that is what I want to talk about in the next installment.

Having driven a Pilot, which shares the chassis and engine with the Odyssey, for 18 years and now having the Tacoma, your take on the two will be interesting.

 

My parents had an odyssey from the mid-00s which solved their issues for hauling people OR materials/rocks. The only regrettable design item I found in my initial assessment for them was the idiotic placement of the spare carrier in the middle of the seats. It wouldn’t be a bad idea, but the placement ONLY accommodated the sub-size spare. So, now you must find a place for that dirty flat tire. My family has always insisted on full size spares. It served them well until they could no longer drive. Roof racks work well on them too! Fire away @hiPSI

 

Can I be the critic in this series? How do they have similar engines? They are very different. One is timing chain and one is timing belt for instance.

 

Odyssey vs Tacoma pt2.
Of course you can be my critic. You all can! This series is my view on the, maybe unconventional, similarities and differences.
Let's start with some facts. Demographics - on my 500 mile drive last Sunday, I hypothesized on the demographics that would A) Shop for each vehicle and B) The target OEM demographic. I then spent quite a few minutes looking up the truth. Please note that no actual OEM in their right mind would publish this data. As a matter of fact, they don't even gather their own data! There are niche companies out there who gather data for everything.
This is what I found:
Honda Odyssey
Majority are female buyers
Majority are moms
Average age is 37!
Majority are buying for hauling people first, all the other stuff second
Way down the list was looks and image

Toyota Tacoma
Majority (80%) are male buyers
Majority are married
Average age is 49!
Looks and image ranked way up there
Surprisingly, using it to haul stuff in the bed that is not lifestyle related was way down the list.

These are the biggest differences in demographics. Everything else is not much different.
What I found proves that Tacomaworld is a tiny subset of owners and has zero relevance in reality haha.

Also, by looks and image ranking high on the Tacoma and low on the Odyssey, it's not a far leap to determine that either A) Adventuresome or B) Wanna be adventuresome is a big deal for Tacoma, where utility is a big deal for the Odyssey.
In part 3 I will go over the specs and this is a big surprise!

 

Thanks Adam I think it was for the rec on the chinese carb, my 17 horse Kohler runs like a scalded dog again. She's only getting ethanol free from now on and Ive got a fuel line shut off now that I can iso downstream of the line filter when it's gonna sit for awhile.

 

At this point the cost of casual "just for fun" driving is beyond what my wallet can absorb. So every drive has to have a destination and a good reason. Preferably two or three good reasons.

 

We’ve rented a Sienna (I’m guessing similar to an Odyssey) multiple times, I’d drive one any day. But I’m also 45, and a dad, but I like to hunt and buy old crap that needs fixin’. Maybe I should rethink my choices in vehicles, crap!

 

Yep. I forgot to say that pretty much any minivan had very similar demographics, but the Tacoma was different in the fact of A) Age and B) lifestyle was down further and using it as an actual truck was higher.
