Well leaving for Montana in 2 weeks, heavy prep work has begun. Got the RTT on today, new breaks tomorrow along with torquing every bolt I can find on the truck. Anyone got any must do pre trip checks I should do? upload_2023-8-26_19-3-59.jpg

Fluids, tire pressures, air filter, spare parts, and tools.

Most overlooked: check brake lines for leaks or damage, and condition of CV boots.

I’ll throw this one in there to stir the oil change pot.
I’m retired from my previous couple of professions ( one of which I was a ASE certified mechanic working only part time )( airline/ freight pilot for 35 plus years was the other)and now work part time a day a week for a FedEx contractor delivering packages.
Right now I’m driving a 13 Ford E 350 long wheel base van.
It’s got 351000 miles on it.
The previous engine got replaced last year @326000 miles because it kept blowing out the spark plugs like these Fords do even though the heads were repaired at the machine shop in Duluth.
The oil in it gets changed around 10000 miles ( and sometimes more)and it uses conventional oil not even synthetic. It was using about a quart every 5000 miles before getting pulled.
The van that I also drove for a while was a 2012 Chevy 1 ton long wheel base with 428000 on it when the timing chain skipped a tooth .It also used about a quart every 5000 miles after the valve cover TSB was done.
These delivery vehicles get hammered six days a week and idle a lot .
The longevity of the engines has got to be that they are at operating temp all day even though they also will do literally 100’s of accelerations and stops a day.
Read into what you will but if anything is severe duty it’s this type of vehicle and they should require more frequent oil changes yet they go some of the longest oil change intervals out there with the cheapest oil and filters.
    What does this mean?
Would these engines last longer with better oil and filters?
I have no idea but this will get people thinking about oil changes intervals ( again lol)
Have a great Saturday night all.

You boys saw it good game! I've been listening to some of it at the fire pit here in the back yard.

    7 in a row!

CV boots is a real good one don’t know why that one hasn’t been on my list. I drive CDL trucks for a living so I tend to run through a very similar pre trip on my personal truck as I do on my DOT pre trips.

Relentless Fab hybrid bumper, 2.5” Dobinsons IMS lift, RCI skids and sliders, block heater. Painted FJ Steelies. Was trying to keep it stock, now slowly building for the Wisconsin trails.
I’ve got a buddy at work who builds mud mowers. It’s an interesting hobby. Definitely a touch cheaper than building A Tacoma it 4Runner.

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
