I was gifted a soft side RTT and I mounted it where the entry point and ladder extend over the tail gate when opened up.

    Mid height bed rack BTW.

I actually like how it is set up but I don’t believe I have ever seen another one installed this way. It’s always with the fold over and entry on the side of the vehicle.

is there a reason for this preference? Is the reason something I may be missing?

Included a picture for reference to what I am describing. Don’t feel like setting up the actual tent for a visual.

I figure it's because the overlanding supplies and things from the bed like slide out drawers might hit the ladder or make it difficult to access. Also is there a possibility the clamshell will pop open if not latched well?

Didn’t think of drawers. I don’t use them so not an issue.

Top won’t come off either due to Velcro and straps.

Just curious why you'd want it to open that way and block access the tailgate? I believe that's why most don't have the tent access setup that way. I was going to do that to ours, but realized it would block tailgate access and chose to open it up on the driver side instead.

Also, where did you find the reference picture? That's a pretty neat scale mock-up

I think it just initially lined up better when I put it on. I’ll try it out and see if I like it.

My daughter got me that for Father’s Day earlier this year. It’s actually got a bunch of little doo dads in the bed. Campfire, cookware, and other diorama stuff.

    Yeah.
The answer is no. Always no.

But seriously, I like to use the tailgate for cooking or just a general flat surface for whatever, plus I like having easy access to stuff in the bed. The bigger tents would likely stick out over the sides if mounted that way -- they get wider in that dimension for more people. Also, I have my awning set up on the same side the tent opens, so the overhang of the tent gives you a lot of covered space on the side of the truck in combination with the awning.

Do what works best for you, though, there's no right or wrong way.

Tried it out in this orientation and I actually liked it.

There's no right or wrong way, but people typically like the easier access to the bed/tailgate. Rear entry isn't for everyone :anonymous:

Rear entry can get a little painful when trying to reach something deep in the front of the bed.

I did like having protection when getting into the tailgate due to the heavy moisture that was present.
