So I upgraded from a 2nd gen to a 2021 SR earlier this year and I love the truck, but I feel like something is missing.

I haven’t done many mods to it but I am almost considering trading it in for a TRD Pro.

There is a beautiful Pro in my area brand new same color with what looks to be a lot of the things I feel like are missing from this one.

Is there really that much of a difference between the 2 or am I crazy?

Any other SR owners feel this way?

What are the specifics on what you feel you are missing? Also let us know your SR engine, transmission, 4x4 or 2WD. Your SR looks great, but I believe you should always get what you want and can afford. Life is too short to be unhappy

Once that upgrade itch tugs at you.......you gonna have to treat it sooner or later.....might as well do it now before it turns to herpes....

I have the 3.5 V6 Automatic 4wd. Most of my complaints are cosmetic with the exception of the terrible headlights. I can’t see anything at night and I’ve seen the threads about everything you can do to it to make it better. But, I guess I’m just trying to see if it’s worth dumping a bunch of money into this thing to make it the way I want or jump ahead in the process by just getting a pro.

I have a 2017 SR with a 2.7 and 5 speed manual. You can't get this combo any longer.

Maybe take off those predator steps. That might just be the ticket.

TRD Pro is quite a jump from SR. What about that "it" factor is missing from, say, a TRD Sport or TRD Off Road?

If that's all that bothers you, you could buy OE LED headlights for much less than trading it in.
Compared to the SR the PRO does have lots of differences,, but not when comparing an OR to a PRO.
That said, if you want to add all kinds of other knickknack things like LED driving lights, auto headlights, wheels, bro lift etc etc, just trading over may prove to be cost less time and money. Maybe the B/Pro isn't the best option, but sometimes I think some could save time and money and trade to the truck they want, rather than swimming through unused wire connectors, and going back to add each option later on.

Well, get the headlights and change over harness. Get the grill. Get the fog lights and the correct switch. All of that will run you around 2500 if the headlights are OEM.

Then if you really want the suspension go and buy it second hand from the marketplace here on the forum.

This way you will save the inequity from the SR being added to the high price of the PRO payment. You will come out thousands ahead in the end.

But if you are missing the interior appointments also, you should just go buy the PRO...

    What’s wrong with the steps?

I haven’t taken a test drive in either so I cant speak for the suspension or anything but the wheels, clearance and sunroof seem like enough to make me happy lol

Yeah dude! Save your money and build out the truck you have now the exact way you want it. You’ll end up feeling like you’re spending a lot on upgrades, but if you look at the hard numbers you’re saving a ton by not going for the Pro. I mean, you even want the same color! Tons of forums on here on getting a harness to hookup the OEM LED headlights. That, plus the pro grill and you’re already feeling cooler. Too bad you’re in the Midwest, I saw a MGM scooped hood on the selling forum here in SoCal yesterday!

Also, sunroof is amazing and all until it inevitably leaks a ton after a few years. My 100 series Land Cruiser had one and I ended up permanently sealing it when I saw how much it would cost to fix up. When I bought my Tacoma, NO SUNROOF was a selling point for me for longevity.

    You have to drive one…

also it’ll probably cost 2x what the sr costs… and I’m not sure that’s worth it. Also you’d have the same engine/Trans in the pro … and overall a very similar truck

In my humble opinion this makes zero sense unless one of the following:

    1. You're flush with cash and have no desire to have upgrades done to your SR.

    or

    2. You're buying a manual transmission TRD Pro.

The drivetrain between the two are identical unless you're going with the manual transmission. Headlights, suspension, seats, entertainment, etc. can all be upgraded and most likely for MANY! thousands less than a new truck. Hell you can even buy the bed stickers, badging, pro wheels, grill and slight lift so it'd look just like a TRD BRO clone from the outside if that's what you're going for.

Also..The facts above probably have something to do with Toyota de-tuning the 4th gen SR model (penalizing it by 50 hp) which is kinda shaitty imo but we'll no longer be able to claim they're the same drivetrain/performance.

I have a pro and I'm getting an SR w/ the 4 cylinder. I'm keeping the Pro for the time being. I want a bare bones truck with the iconic 4 cylinder. I don't use my Pro for it capabilities. Mainly highway use, but really it is not more capable than other 4wd Tacomas. Yea, you get some nice red suspension bits and it's leveled from the factory. I find the seats in the Pro uncomfortable. They look good, but there is not as much cushion in them compared to the cloth seats. I current stance with mine is: It looks good but is it worth the cost? Probably not but I'm just not ready to part ways with it

The Fox shocks need rebuilding a lot more than the regular shocks found on the TRDOR and TRD Sport. You can get the wheels for either, along with the sunroof. Any difference in clearance is pretty negligible. Plus the TRDOR and TRD Sport are much cheaper despite being very similar (especially the TRDOR).

They're like big hooks hanging down to catch on absolutely everything when off-roading. If you don't off-road then there's no issue with them. They're also not as strong as sliders and would fold when hitting a rock instead of protecting the rocker panel.

Okay I’m gonna take everyone’s advice here and just stick it out with my SR for now

If anything I’ll go test drive a an off-road and see if that’s everything I’m looking for

Thank you all for the input and for steering me away from bad financial decisions lol

Smart, pay off current then add doodads. All those options are probably in your head, ask yourself if you actually need them.

If I could afford it I'd get the pro. On a budget, take all those suggestions into consideration and keep the SR. I love my Sport but would love a Pro. Would it look great? Yes! Would I use it to it's full potential? No. Really a waste of money then.
