I've also realized that this is the primary reason why our parents had to "check the candy for intact wrapping/needle holes" after we got home. They didn't really believe or care if that shit was poisoned, they wanted first dibs on the good stuff

to be fair I think my mom was one of those moms that legit believed people were out there trying to put LSD in kids candy, only because I know both my parents didn't really eat the stuff. And she had to inspect every single piece.

But I will definitely use that excuse just to nab all the Reeses and 3 Musketeers from Sofia's stash...if it's spiked then that's just added bonus

if you want to watch a good show, Dopesick (Hulu) goes over this whole time period back then when Purdue was basically slinging Oxy to doctors across the country and giving them huge perks (vacations, money, etc) to prescribe as much of it as possible to anyone and everyone. Basically opened the door to the opioid epidemic we have today. DEA finally cracked down on them though, thankfully. They have a lot of blood on their hands

 

Isn't that still a thing?

Not to the extent of vacations and stuff but in general, they get perks for using one brand name's specific product?

yeah it was crazy. They were doing all kinds of shitty things to push pills into as many hands as possible. They were the ones that invented those pain charts you see in doctor's offices still, but at the time it was supposed to be an easy way for doctors to prescribe Oxy to patients. And of course people figured that out pretty quick so everyone's pain was suddenly on the 8 to 10 scale. And they were doing massive bonuses for their sales reps to get as many doctors on board as possible. They basically paid the FDA to say that Oxy wasn't addictive which was a massive lie. Whole thing was fucked up. It's a good show though

When I had my spine fused - they put me on oxy something.
I -point blank- asked those fuckers if they were just giving me Rx heroin.
The fucking swore up/down/sideways that Oxy was not heroin . . . .
If my dumbass with some chemistry knew the difference, they sure AF did..

Fast Forward to the 'pain mgmt' doc they sent me to - he was/is an MD instructor at a D1 university medical school..
I would go in and say this extended release shit isn't working - he would basically recite advert literature to me and tell me I was wrong, then give me more drugs . . . he was on their pay roll, giving talks and doing shit; I would see the drug reps come in and bring smoothies/breakfast for the staff and such . . had a front row seat, it was so vile..
I wound up having to slowly redux/refuse Rx and wean my way off that shit myself.
The best day ever was when I called and canceled my future appointments. I'm lucky I made it out [relatively] unscathed..

 

Yeah that is scary, it's especially hard because the people who do need pain management/opioids get shunned by doctors now due to all the BS that went on back then (and still goes on) with opiate abuse. Glad you made it out the other side, that's not an easy feat, believe me I know. Addiction is a bitch and many were ushered into it by their own doctors that believed in all the BS Purdue was putting out there that their drugs were somehow 'safe'.

 

I think I'm going to have to check a pack of Reese's peanut butter cups at the grocery store today. Make sure there's no razor blades in them
