so, I put on my engineering hat at one point and determined the math maths for improving NOX and PM2.5 produced. That said, like you say, fuel economy is worse and the total greenhouse gases produced are in excess compared to a diesel without emissions. They're purely for controlling visible smog / acid rain in metro areas and not really preventing global warming

That said, a modern diesel with no emissions controls is still significantly more efficient than an 80-90s engine.

It's all bleh.

I'd be laughing but I think this implies they'll eventually be going after conventional racing shops that do tuning for gas vehicles as well as any kind of performance parts

It's already happening. For example, URD has already been forced to take some product off the shelves. Their downstream O2 sensor simulator is such a product.

Oddly enough though they removed going after resellers and shops from there current priority list. There was something associated with activism in relation to the RPM act that's currently working on getting certain performance things like aftermarket computers and whatnot removed from the docket of things to go after because they're designed for Motorsport. And they determine the magnitude of population using them was minor

 

but we gotta go after the .02 percent of car owners with an aftermarket tune !!! They're the real hooligans!!! Instead of big industry!!!!
