For anyone set on trading in for a 4th gen. I think I saw someone here said they were/did.

Have you gone to get dealer even though there is no pricing or anything yet to try and put a deposit? Did they give you a guaranteed price for your trade?

Damn I hope so. I don’t like what I see in these pics at all. Zero chance a medium dog can be comfortable back there, seats up or down.

The back seat space looks like it go smaller. WTF. Also the under seat storage looks like it will hold next to nothing. I’ve got a bunch of tools stored in mine.

Don’t look at me. I offered a detailed review of why the turbo 4 is good. Very good.

Wait, no. I think I said it sucks. My bad.

Haven't seen any youtuber asking the practical question or at least a little bit curious if the new gen is saddled with the same catylicktical convergers in the same easy to steal locations. I mean if you stick your ass under the vehicle, might as well find out. Guess that is too weird a question.

Not really a review, more of a speculation.

My dealer does not require a deposit. You have 48 hours to close the deal once they call you or you loose it. You give them your want list with at least 3 color options and if it is a close match they will call you if your next in line for that trim. Pricing will be at MSRP or below with no add ons. I doubt you are going to find a dealer to commit to a trade in value when there are still at least 4 months before these start hitting the lots and used values are dropping every month.

    I hope I’m wrong, and you’re right b/c I actually like turbos.

Not sold yet vs V6, but I can be bribed w the right torque curve & some extra sound deadening.

2.4T shouldn’t sound bad with a high flow cat. My previous GTIs always sounded decent with a real (see: not straight pipe) exhaust.

Yeah our cx5 with the 2.5t sounds really decent and has almost zero notable vibration

and makes more torque at 2000 than a 3.5 makes at 4600. It definitely can be done

So after driving in the new 23 highlander for a two weeks I am finally back in my 16 taco and it’s interesting to compare the differences, obviously not an apples to apples comparison but it gave me a good feeling for the new 2.4l and where Toyota is as a brand in 2023.

I have to say I was very impressed with the new highlander. I can see why it is still at the top of its class. It was smoother, quieter and more refined than previous generations. The electric steering was very precise compared to their older cars. Lane assist and adaptive cruise control are great features for long drives, and the system seems to work quite well. The 2.4l moved the 5000 pound SUV with ease, I can see why they are using it in the 4g taco, 6g 4Runner and the new Land Cruiser, you really wouldn’t think a 2.4 4 banger could be so powerful.

I was also impressed by the new 8 speed transmission that will carry over into the taco. It is smoother and much faster than the 6AT in our trucks. It never hunted for gears or gave me any issues. I think that’s part of the reason why the new engine felt so good. It was nice having a powertrain that could maintain 75 at 2500 rpm while it climbed a 6% grade (Eisenhower pass).

The first thing I noticed when I got back in the third gen was how solid the entire vehicle felt. The hydraulic steering is nice and heavy while still providing good feedback and precise steering. The third gen has a rugged character that is really appealing compared to the majority of vehicles on the road. I really hope they can capture that character with the new truck. The 3.5 has it’s drawbacks, but there is something special about the old school feel that a big NA engine gives you. Yes it’s slow, yes it doesn’t make any usable torque below 3000, but it’s smooth and still feels brand new at 185,000 miles. I think we will miss that old school character on the 4th gen. I will keep my 16 for a long time, even after I get a 4th gen because these trucks are still awesome even for all the bitchin we do about them on here.

I had a GTI, loved the torque coming off corners, front wheels pulling. Also had a 4G63 (Evo IV) which I still consider to be the holy grail of 4cyl turbos. Just sweet, violent 4 wheel drama.

So I guess what I’m saying is I’m skeptical but open minded, let’s see how it all works in a Taco. Besides, the 8spd might be the real difference here anyway.

Torque notwithstanding, its hard to argue that the 2.4 turbo is a better long-term power plant for a Tacoma than a NA V6. I happily lug my '19 around at 1400 rpm sipping gas and when I need more torque at the wheels, I know how to call it up. I've driven the Ranger and I suspect the tin can feeling it elicited is going to be there in the new Tacoma. That turbo is going to work its ass off feeding those four cylinders.

The iForce Max setup is the only way to go in the 4th gen, IMO.

The Max in the tundra is great, I think it will be the way to go as well.

We’ll just have to see long term. The head of engine R&D stated in a tfl interview that durability was prioritized over both drivability and efficiency when adapting the new engine for truck duty. He stated it was tested to 1.6x the durability standard of the transverse application, and 1.3x the thermal durability for the turbo itself which is supposedly commercial grade. It was also benchmarked against the durability the previous v6 engines so it will probably continue the tradition of longevity.

Modern day turbos are not on/off switches. It's not likes it's going to be in the boost just cruising down the highway. You can happily lug this thing at 1400 rpm and then get in the boost when needed. All with 2 less cylinders. The turbo is going to work just as hard as it was designed too, just like the rest of the components.

I understand what your saying, but there is nothing old school about the 3.5l. It's probably one of the most advanced v6 NA engines in its class. Hell it has 12 injectors to handle both port and direct injection AND runs on a entirely different cycle (Atkinson).
