I have made a hundred dumb decisions based on things I like

I could make a thousand dumb decisions based on other things I like as well

 

man that sucks, maybe applying for the wrong cards? There are definitely ones out there for people like him to start building credit

 

Lets be honest, I think most of us could make an endless number of dumb decisions based on things we like if we let ourselves haha

Yeah but if you go in swinging, you're gonna miss and those inquiries sit on your bureau for 2 years

That's why when he first mentioned it, I specifically told him to get a secured card

 

My first credit card was a $500 limit one through my dad's company's credit union (Farmers) when I was like 17, wonder if a credit union might be better for him when the timing is right.

 

I'm sure a card exists he could get approved for. Another way is to have a joint card, if thats an option.

 

I may not know jack shit about 99% of stuff we post here, but if I do give advice, it stems from having a ton of experience in it

 

At 17 you would've been an authorized user and not legally responsible for it if you defaulted

You got a 'history' on the books and the line of credit would've been denoted by (A) on your bureau

Many places shine it off and auto reject the same way; really you lucked out applying for the right account when you did the first time on your own

 

At least I’m not in a million dollars a of debt like the people that call into Dave Ramsey lol

 

That trust fund has allowed you to pay everything in cash that's why

 

I must have...I don't even think I actually got a real credit card until I was in my mid 20s. But I financed a few cars between 18 - 25 and had student loan payments monthly which were probably what really built my credit early on.

 

I got my dads old 99 Forester for college haha

 

Not the worst starting point.
I have plenty of friends still paying student loans too.

 

Yeah, he wanted you to remain humble while at your Ivy league college

 

Yeah I got my first one when I turned 18 and had moved alone cross country. Bought a dumb TV right away, because of course.

 

Luckily, I qualified for federal and state aid, and also got a geology scholarship, then an assistantship for grad school.

 

99 Foresters are still cool tho
